 Violence Register PK

Why cricket in Pakistan is infused with religion and nationalism

Cricket in Pakistan has become all about politics and religion, with narratives like "avenging" the "mistreatment" of Muslims by defeating India, or "teaching a lesson" to New Zealand for walking away from a match.
Soon after Pakistan defeated India in a T20 Cricket World Cup match on Sunday, the South Asian country's interior minister, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad, said the win was the "victory of Islam."
"Muslims all over the world are rejoicing," the minister said in a video message on Twitter.
It was the first time Pakistan dominated India in a World Cup match. Celebrations were naturally in order, with people across the country taking to the streets, chanting patriotic slogans, dancing and waving national flags.
Relations between India and Pakistan have been acrimonious since the two countries gained independence from British rule in 1947. They have fought three full-fledged wars, and they continue to accuse each other of interfering in the disputed Kashmir region, which they both claim in its entirety but rule in part. The geopolitical hostility has spilled over into sports, especially cricket, which is the most popular sport in both India and Pakistan. After India's defeat on Sunday, Pakistani social media was inundated with anti-India posts, memes, and comments.
Nationalism meets Islamism
In the past, the India-Pakistan cricketing rivalry was punctuated with nationalistic sentiment, and more recently, religion has also started playing a big part.
Many Pakistanis believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is curbing the rights of Indian Muslims.
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has repeatedly dubbed the Modi government a "fascist regime," accusing it of unleashing violence on Muslims, not only in India-administered Kashmir, but in other parts of the country as well.
Experts say Interior Minister Ahmad's "victory of Islam" statement should be viewed in the same light, as it implied that Pakistan "avenged" the "Indian atrocities" against Muslims.
"It was a reckless comment," Nadeem Farooq Paracha, a renowned Pakistani social critic and journalist, told DW.
"Many Pakistani politicians tend to bring Islam into everything. Those in power, who are failing to do what they were elected to do, do it more often. Islam is their last resort," he added.
Islamization of cricket
Until the 1990s, most Pakistani cricketers kept their faith away from their profession. Many of them were clean-shaven, and some, like Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who won the cricket World Cup in 1992, were British educated. In the past two decades, many Pakistani cricketers joined the Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic missionary group that has millions of followers in the country.Khan, who was once known for his "playboy" image in the UK, is now a conservative politician, who believes that the Western cultural influence is corrupting young Pakistanis.
Many cricketers now use religious terminology in their press conferences, and some even prostrate on field after a victory.
Pakistani social media users lauded batsman Mohammad Rizwan for offering an on-field prayer during the India-Pakistan match.
Former Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Yunis got so carried away with the gesture that he told a Pakistani news channel that watching Rizwan offering "namaz" (the Muslim prayer) "in front of Hindus was very special to him."
Younis later apologized for his comments: "In the heat of the moment, I said something I did not mean."
But Qaiser Iqbal, a 39-year-old Karachi-based supporter of Khan, said that "praying during a match gives a psychological boost to players."
"They feel satisfied that they did their best, and now it is up to God to help them," he told DW.
Zahida Nazar, a Lahore-based banker, said that Muslims believe God helps the faithful through hard times. "But I think hard work is also needed to win a game," she added.
But what has prompted Pakistani cricketers to become overly religious on and off field?
"There hasn't been much research on this topic, but few academics and journalists have tried to understand the phenomenon," Farooq Sulehria, a researcher and journalist, told DW.
"We must understand that cricketers are part of society, and Islam has become the 'monoculture' in Pakistan. Cricketers, film stars and other celebrities simply jump on the bandwagon," he added.
According to Paracha, the Islamization of cricket in Pakistan started in the early 2000s when the Tablighi Jamaat movement managed to recruit some leading cricket players as its members.
"The team had performed badly in the 2003 World Cup, and the squad was already under scrutiny for being match-fixers. This served a signal for repenting and redemption. Exhibition of religiosity peaked between 2003 and 2007," Paracha explained.
Cricket as a social distraction
Sociologists say that ruling classes all over the world use sports as a distraction from real political issues.
In Pakistan, cricket serves the same purpose. During cricket tournaments, people tend to forget about misgovernance and staggering inflation and take refuge in nationalism.
"Cricket has become increasingly associated with politics in India and Pakistan," Paracha underlined.
Sulehria is of the view that sports could also play a positive role. "If you look at the situation in Afghanistan, cricket has become a symbol of resistance against the Taliban. But in India and Pakistan, the ruling classes are using cricket to distract people from their oppressive measures."
Pakistan is currently facing one of the worst economic crises in its history. Khan has been strongly criticized for rising inflation and the depreciating currency value. Yet, cricket provides his government a chance to "unify" the country.
"Khan has definitely benefited from the infusion of nationalism and cricket, but his popularity is declining. It can't save him for long," according to Sulehria.
Khan, who entered politics after retiring from professional cricket in 1992, has been considered by experts as one of the biggest beneficiaries of widespread depoliticization in Pakistan.
Before emerging as an important political player in the country, Khan was hailed as a "messiah" who won the country its first World Cup.
His supporters believe that if he could "miraculously" deliver the sport's most-prestigious trophy to Pakistan, he could also "fix" the country's myriad problems."I think Imran Khan can rid the country of corruption. He can make Pakistan strong, like he did with his World Cup-winning cricket team. But he needs a better team in governance," Lahore-based banker Nazar said.
Analysts say that cricket is responsible for "depoliticizing" Pakistanis, who believe in simple solutions to complex problems.
Analyst Paracha agrees: "Cricket in India and Pakistan has become a political tool; it's not just another sport anymore."

Pak Pays Over ₹ 26 Billion Interest Cost To China To Repay Debt: Report

The annual financial statement released by State Bank of Pakistan on Friday revealed that the bank tapped the $4.5 billion or 30 billion yuan trade finance under the China-Pakistan swap arrangement, reports said.
Bearing the cost of failure of the ruling governments in Pakistan, the country has had to pay over ₹ 26 billion in interest cost to China to repay a maturing debt in the fiscal year 2020-21, reported local media.China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has left scores of lower-and middle-income countries (LMIC) saddled with "hidden debts" totalling $385 billion, according to new research.
The findings are part of a report published by AidData, an international development research lab based at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. According to this report, China has used debt rather than aid to establish a dominant position in the international development finance market.
The annual financial statement was released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday that revealed that the bank tapped the $4.5 billion or 30 billion yuan trade finance under the China-Pakistan swap arrangement, reported The Express Tribune."During the year, the overall limit of 20 billion yuan has been further extended to 30 billion yuan for a period of three years against the rupee with the maturity buckets of three months to one year. These purchases have been fully utilised as of June 30, 2021," the newspaper reported citing the financial statement.
The statement further said that the interest charged on the outstanding balance was ₹ 26.1 billion.
The central bank stated that there was an increase of ₹ 272 billion in a single year till June, the currency swap value increasing from ₹ 476.6 billion to ₹ 748.5 billion.
The newspaper further reported that Pakistan has been repaying foreign debts using the Chinese trade finance facility.
Notably, Pakistan had received $6.2 billion financial package from Saudi Arabia for three years in 2018 which Saudi claimed back "ahead" of its schedule, reported the newspaper citing the Ministry of Finance information.
Interestingly, Pakistan had repaid the loan to Saudi after taking a loan of the same amount from China.

By protesting against inflation in every district today, the Pakistanis have rejected Imran Khan’s policies – Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

KARACHI / ISLAMABAD / LAHORE / PESHAWAR / QUETTA, October 29: Chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has commended his party’s office-bearers and Jeyalas (diehard workers) for the gigantic public protests across Pakistan against the paralysing inflation because of the devastatingly failed policies of the PTI-regime in Pakistan.

Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that slogans to get rid of Imran Khan are now being echoed in nook and corner of the country.
According to a statement issued by the Media Cell Bilawal House, Chairman PPP, appreciated the provincial and district organisations of the four provinces, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan chapters, as well as all sister-organisations including students, youth, women, labourers and farmers wings for holding historical protests.

Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari applauded the provincial and district organisations of Punjab and Islamabad for staging protests against inflation in province and in Islamabad.
He said that the chain of historic protests against inflation has proved that the economic massacre of the masses could no longer continue.
By protesting against inflation in every district today, the Pakistanis have rejected Imran Khan’s policies based on his incompetence, he added.
He further said that PPP has represented the sentiments of all Pakistanis by holding protests against inflation.

Chairman PPP eulogised the provincial and district organizations of his party’s South Punjab chapter for holding mass protests in the Wasaib and said that the people of Wasaib have once again manifested the resistance by protesting against inflation in every city there.
He said that the people of Wasaib, who are cursing the rulers on inflation, knew well that the PTI-led puppet government and Imran Khan are the real culprits, adding that the public protests have exposed the fabricated popularity of the selected Prime Minister.
“Imran Khan will be remembered as one of the worst characters in history who destroyed the country economically”‘ said Chairman PPP.
He praised the provincial and district organisations of Sindh chapter for producing huge protest rallies against inflation in the province.
He said that Sindh’s resistance against dictatorial regimes and the puppets has always been a party’s Hallmark.
He said that from Karachi to Kashmore, the people of Sindh came out against inflation and pronounced their verdict from top of the roof against the PTI regime. He further said that today, the public has also rejected Imran Khan’s attempts to drown the city of lights, Karachi into darkness.
“Today’s protest is a message for Imran Khan that the nation is not ready to bear him as their ruler”, he maintained.

Chairman PPP has praised provincial and district organisations of his PPP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter for staging massive protests against inflation accross the province, and said that the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have rejected the so-called “Tabdeeli Tsunami”, adding that it was a public referendum as people in every district of province took to the streets to protest against inflation.
He further said that Imran Khan was snatching the least morsel from mouth of the people. A nationwide movement against the PTI- led federal government has sprung up.

Chairman PPP also commended provincial and district organidations for protesting against inflation in Balochistan and said that the people of Balochistan taking to the streets against inflation is a charge sheet against the selected government.
He said that the entire country was bearing the inefficiency of Imran Khan’s as his economic policies have utterly failed.
He further said that the protests against Imran Khan in every city today are an expression of public anger. The scale of patience of the people has reached the climax, the PTI- led federal government should take the nails of consciousness.
Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari commended the organisation for holding anti-inflation protests all over Azad Jammu and Kashmir like the rest of the country and said that the historic protest against inflation in every district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir was an important milestone.
He said that people from mountains to seas were taking to the streets to express their grief and anger against Imran Khan.
He further said that today it has been proved that the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir do not accept the illegitimate government of PTI. Imran Khan used to say that if a slogan was raised against him, he would resign and today the whole nation is united against the selected Prime Minister. The Chairman PPP also commended the provincial and district organisations for holding anti-inflation protests in Gilgit-Baltistan and said that the voices echoing against the selected government of the PTI in the Himalayan mountains and in the heights of Karakoram are signs of utter hatred. In every district of Gilgit-Baltistan, there is a series of protests against the inflationary government will throw out it.
He said that in the name of new Pakistan, Imran Khan has ruined the country only.
He further said that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, disturbed by inflation, would never forgive Imran Khan for his economic crimes.

Pakistan continues to give air access to US, Congress told

A senior Pentagon official has informed Congress that Pakistan continues to give the United States access to its airspace and the two sides are also talking about keeping that access open.

US Undersecretary of Defence for Policy Colin Kahl shared this information with the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday during an open/closed hearing on “Security in Afghanistan and in the regions of South and Central Asia”.

He was replying to a question from the committee’s chairman Senator Jack Reed, who asked him to update the panel on “our arrangement with Pakistan regarding their cooperation with us in counterterrorism”. The senator referred to recent press reports claiming that Pakistan was working with the Taliban to attack the militant Islamic State group.

“Pakistan is a challenging actor, but they don’t want Afghanistan to be a safe haven for terrorist attacks, external attacks, not just against Pakistan but against others” as well, Dr Kahl told the open session. “They continue to give us access to Pakistani airspace and we are in conversation about keeping that access open.”

Pakistan police were shocked after TLP workers fired sub-machine guns during protests, reports say.

Last week, TLP workers had launched a rally from Lahore to Islamabad demanding that the Pakistan government release their leader Saad Rizvi.
Security officials in Pakistan are shocked after it emerged that members of the banned Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan party reportedly used sub-machine guns (SMGs) against policemen during anti-government protests, prompting the authorities to conclude that the hardline Islamists had been turned into a “militant group”, a media report said on Saturday.
A mobile phone footage, which showed members of the party firing 80 rounds of SMGs at policemen in Kamoke, in Pakistan’s Punjab province, on Thursday, was presented during a high-level security meeting, the Dawn newspaper reported.Other incidents of attacks were also recorded, which showed two policemen succumbing to bullet wounds, while 16 others sustaining injuries from the shots fired by TLP members, the report said.
“It has shocked police high-ups from where the TLP was getting weapons and training to use them,” the police official was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
He added that all participants of the high-level security meeting had reached the conclusion that the TLP had been turned into a ‘militant group’ and the government must review its policy seriously towards this outfit, the report said.On Saturday, thousands of TLP workers were camped in Wazirabad, after talks between the government and the party leadership remained inconclusive, the Express Tribune reported. Meanwhile, Minister of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Pir Noor-ul-Haq Qadri said on Saturday that a 12-member panel was formed to act as a negotiator between the Pakistan government and TLP, according to a report in Geo News.
The minister said religious leaders from across the country met Prime Minister Imran Khan and expressed their resolve to solve the issue peacefully, the report said.
Last week, the TLP workers had launched a rally from Lahore to Islamabad demanding that the Pakistan government release their leader Saad Rizvi, who was arrested last year for demonstrations against France after a French magazine published caricatures of Prophet Muhammad, and expel the French ambassador.

Meet Sheikh Rasheed – Pakistan’s interior minister, ‘cricketer’, and maker of ‘smart bombs’

NAILA INAYAT
@nailainayat

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad poses as crusader of blasphemy politics, part-time interior minister and, most recently, a cricketer.
Sometimes he’s a sarkari Wizard of Oz, sometimes the uncouth desi Donald Trump, sometimes the only eligible bachelor to have walked the earth. Other times, not suitable to be an office messenger of the current Pakistan prime minister, but he thinks he’s a general without uniform. So, his political loyalties don’t matter as much as his loyalty to Gate Number Four of GHQ Rawalpindi. In his free time, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad poses as a crusader of blasphemy politics, as long as his opponents are on the receiving end, part-time interior minister and, most recently, a cricketer who no one knew.
What we now do know is that since 1992, all the heartbreaks that Pakistani fans suffered in the World Cup matches against India were due to Sheikh Rasheed. For he says he has played in every game till Dubai 2021. Now count the odd one out. Heartbroken fans of the 1996 World Cup quarter-final, who vilified Aamer Sohail for getting bowled over by Venkatesh Prasad after pointing his bat towards the cover boundary and throwing away the match, can now rest in peace. It was actually all done by a certain Sheikh. Though cricket statisticians might have no record.
Having secured a two-day off from Prime Minister Imran Khan, this ‘player’ arrived in Dubai to watch the India-versus-Pakistan T20 game, but on the eve of the clash, he returned home to deal with some issues of national importance. What could be more important than a cricket match for Pakistan’s interior minister, you’d think? Islamist Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protesters marching towards Islamabad demanding the release of their chief Saad Hussain Rizvi and the expulsion of French ambassador from Pakistan. Elated with his performance in the cricket field, not on the negotiation table with TLP, Rasheed burst into a passionate speech. And why not, Labbaik protesters challenging the writ of the State is a bi-annual affair, whereas winning against India is once in forever.
Posing in front of a laal haveli backdrop, the interior minister declared that Pakistan’s win was a victory of Islam. “Entire alam-e-Islam was proud of Pakistan win against India.” If the 13th match was a victory of Islam, then who lost the previous 12 times? Leave alone being proud, why would the Islamic world be bothered with a game it doesn’t even play at the highest level. No one gave us the memo that a T20 match is actually a holy war for Pakistan. Bangladesh and the new-found ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’ would thankfully feel left out. Pakistan’s alam-e-Islam delusions go as far as calling its own nuclear weaponry an ‘Islamic bomb’. Now game wins are portrayed as feats for the greater good of the ummah. While back in the real world, Pakistan continues to take financial handouts from Saudi Arabia to run the country. So yeah, World Cup match is a win for Islamic world, but Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman still has to make a financial deposit of $3billion.
Guns and roses
Staying on the nukes, wars and wizardry, Sheikh Rasheed has a special gift to predict events, like when governments will be toppled – ‘Qurbani se pehle qurbani hogi’. The war with India will begin in November-December 2019, he had assured everyone. Because Pakistan hadn’t made an atom bomb for Diwali or Shab-e-baraat – always a favourite hook line. “Neither will any grass grow in India nor bells will ring in the temple of Balaji after this war,” he threatened.
After the abrogation of Article 370 by India, things got real with Sheikh. Then a railway minister, he got a jolt from a mic he was holding at a rally and saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi behind it. He claimed Pakistan and India had fought 10 wars. Now I, for one, want a copy of the Pakistan Studies book he’s reading from. A figment of his imagination, Rasheed also said India should fear Pakistan’s ‘smart bombs’ because it could divide the country into ‘22 parts’. His theory of 125-250 gram bombs for India was as real as us buying aik pao yoghurt and telling the shopkeeper: “Double shopper kar dena (Give me an extra big bag)”. Bomb in a shopper bag, the future of bombs was here. Then there were the ‘precision bombs’ for India’s non-Muslims that Sheikh and some scientist discovered, which stay in their drawing room now, we assume. But never underestimate the man’s love for his country – he is ready to fight on the border with India. Even though he ran away on the day of the nuclear tests for which he now claims credit and also says that then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had no role in driving the policy.
3
Now haters are going to say that most of Sheikh Rasheed’s political rhetoric is just what it is supposed to be, rhetoric. Serving at the pleasure of multiple rulers in a career spanning 35 years, you do become more than nuisance value, especially when you are the country’s interior minister. Statements that you then give are a driver of your office, but no one in this hybrid regime seems to care. The ins and outs of politics, who’s meeting who, what’s the military establishment thinking, are some things the local media believes is in Sheikh Rasheed’s patari (basket). His nemeses would say he meets the chaprasi (office messenger) and tells everyone “Meri sahib se mulaqat hui hai (I’ve met the boss)”.
Chaprasi was something Prime Minister Imran Khan didn’t plan to keep Sheikh Rasheed as, that’s why he is now his interior minister. There was mutual disdain – Sheikh Rasheed thought Khan was a ‘mamooli kaptaan’, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf was a ‘tonga’ party with one seat in the national assembly. Back in the day, Khan was vocal about Sheikh’s jihadi connections in Kashmir and his camps in Rawalpindi. The same estate that is now known as Freedom House, a farmhouse of sorts where the minister is often seen spending quality time riding, boating, fishing and even feeding ducks. Not at par with Amrish Puri and Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘aao aao’ pigeon-feeding moment in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, but we’ll still give him 250-gram bombs for effort.
Often seen with cigars, Sheikh Rasheed is a foodie at heart, whose favourite chicken piece since childhood has been the ‘leg piece’ or the drumstick. Something he had to fight for with his siblings, now drumstick lovers can all relate to that.
‘Duniya haseeno ka mela, melay mein Sheikh akela’
Among other things of national importance has been Sheikh Rasheed remaining single. “Aapne shaadi nahin ki, koi mili nahin? (Why haven’t you gotten married?)” reporters would ask him. “Mera dil koi supermarket nahin hai (my heart is not a supermarket),” he’d tell. He believes an express train never ‘weighs’ a passenger, whatever that means. Seemingly romantic at heart, Rasheed shares how he would be impressed by a woman who was khoonkhaar (fiesty) and whose presence could be felt: “Double B ho toh B2 a2=a+b, then it impress me.” Now this is a formula that single men at 70 must apply.
Rasheed’s most bizarre take yet is that if you can get fresh milk from the market, don’t buy a buffalo. The same mindset that led him to launch a rather vulgar attack against Reham Khan after her marriage with Imran Khan ended, equating her to a ‘tawaif’ on a tv show and saying that even ‘ka***rs’ have some values. This is not the first time though. He called slain prime minister Benazir Bhutto a ‘taxi’ in the national assembly and Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari ‘a manufacturing defect’. But such behaviours are never ostracised and so it continues to thrive.

#Pakistan - Mira Sethi wants to know why our definition of masculinity starts and ends with a woman's clothing

Your 'mardangi' should be strong enough not to feel threatened by what a woman wears, the actor said in a recent interview.

Mira Sethi is known for not mincing her words when it comes to talking about women's rights. She's been vocal about intolerance towards women in society as well as a woman's right to dress however she pleases. In a recent interview, Sethi talked about how society's definition of masculinity has become so fragile that a man's pride feels threatened by a woman's choice of clothes. In an interview with Independent Urdu, the Chupke Chupke actor shared her thoughts on the objections raised against what women wear on social media. "I saw a comment underneath a post made by my colleague and friend Ushna Shah on Instagram," Sethi said. She was wearing jeans and a top in the post and the comment underneath it read 'if my mardaangi (masculinity) compels me to act in a certain way now then don't blame me'."
"What is this masculinity exactly?" she asked. "Why is your definition of masculinity and pride so narrow that it starts and ends at a woman's clothing? An independent woman and a broad-minded man can both co-exist in this society together."
Sethi mentioned the prevalent perception of masculinity can't handle the thought of women wearing, what is perceived as, flashy or bold clothes. "I really don't understand this," she said. The actor asked people to broaden their minds and definitions of masculinity. "If a man is sitting in front of me wearing tight jeans, I won't just go on and say 'your tight jeans are pulling me towards sin'. Women don't speak like this," she assert. Our thoughts don't go in this direction and this society hasn't even given us the right to speak like this to a man, she said. "But men think they can say stuff like this to women anytime."
Why do men police us so much? the actor asked. "If we talk about your masculinity then it should be confident enough and allow you to live without it feeling threatened. Of course, we have to be mindful of not crossing certain boundaries. As women we are aware of what those boundaries are because we live in this society."
Sethi was met with criticism for her choice of clothing at the Lux Style Awards. In response, she posted a lengthy message on Instagram telling her haters to back off. "Go home. I don’t dress for you," the actor had said. "I don’t dress for anyone or anything other than my own sense of joy and play and expansion. The men of this country are obsessed with policing women, constantly defining their ‘honour’ in relation to women’s bodies and clothing and appearance. It is a small minded, decayed, hateful thing to do. You want to disempower us because a deep part of you is hurting and angry. I get it. It’s societal and it is ugly."
In her recent interview, Sethi urged men to think deeply about the issue at hand. "People often say to men you have mothers and sisters. Yes those women are mothers and sisters but they are individuals as well. People often ask 'why did you rape her? She's someone's mother or sister'. Why can't people just ask 'why did you rape her?'. Full stop."
The actor also shared her thoughts on the efforts being made for women's rights in Pakistan. "I believe that the oppression women are facing in Pakistan these days has increased a lot," she said. "A bill against domestic violence was not passed in parliament recently. It wasn't passed because of 'politics', even though it should have been passed. I think the government should take these things seriously. They aren't taking it seriously though, and so people have to raise their voice against these issues. Women have to raise their voices. I believe we have a very long way to go.
"Our Constitution should be so strong in upholding women's rights and protecting women against violence that we would not have to worry. Unfortunately we haven't reached that point yet," she emphasised.
