Aamna Taseer, the widow of slain Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer Shaheed, has called upon the government and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to release all non-combatant prisoners – women, children and the elderly – with them.
In a statement issued on Monday, she said that in accordance with the international humanitarian law, all civilians who are not taking a direct part in ‘hostilities’, either from the side of the government or the TTP, should be released forthwith for the sake of peace in the country. Last week, the TTP had handed over a list of around 300 prisoners to the interior minister, suggesting the government to release them in order to make the atmosphere conducive for talks. Similarly, the government has also demanded that the Taliban release all the civilians kidnapped by their allies.
