Pak govt puts Asia Bibi on no-fly list to curb protests
The Pakistan government has given in to demands from Islamist hardliners that Asia Bibi, the Christian woman recently acquitted of blasphemy charges, not be allowed to move out, Dawn reported.
The decision to place Asia on the country’s no-fly list came just two days after Prime Minister Imran Khan gave a fiery national address warning state action against protesters decrying her acquittal. The Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has also promised that it will not object to a review petition filed Thursday against the top court’s verdict on Asia Bibi.
The actions stem from an agreement signed with the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan in a bid to end the nationwide protests it had launched against the acquittal.
