Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has congratulated film maker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, who has earned International acclaim, on the nomination of her film highlighting the problem of honour killings in Pakistan. “The nation is proud of this courageous and talented film maker who had earlier won an Oscar award on her sensitive portrayal of the plight of women who had suffered acid attacks. The most befitting response to this national honour would be for us to fight against the so called honour killings at all levels.”
Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also called upon the government to take up the issue of anti-honour killing legislation seriously. Praising PPP legislators for presenting the law against honour crimes in the Senate, he reminded the government that PPP’s Senator had moved anti honour crime law in February 2015 which was passed unanimously by the Senate after which PPP took it forward to the National Assembly. But unfortunately the government allowed this very important legislation to lapse as it failed to bring the law to the Standing Committee despite several reminders, which show its lack of commitment on this issue.
He urged the government to ensure that this important law barring honour crimes was taken up at the joint sitting of the parliament at the earliest, to which the bill has now been referred.
