Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in a phone talk with his Iraqi counterpart, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, voiced support over the situation around Turkish troops' illegal deployment in Iraq's north, the Russian foreign ministry said on Saturday adding the conversation was initiated by Iraq.
"The Iraqi minister notified (Lavrov) on developments around the illegal intrusion of Turkish military contingent into Iraq’s north and Baghdad’s appeal to the UN on the issue," the foreign ministry said.
"The Russian side has expressed its firm and principled position supporting Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity along with the steps Iraq's authorities are taking in compliance with norms of international law and the UN Charter," the ministry said.
"Discussing the Syria crisis, Sergey Lavrov and Ibrahim al-Jaafari called for the continuation of collective work within the format of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) with participation of all its members, without exception, being the optimal effective mechanism of external influence to keep the negotiating process afloat between Syria’s government and opposition on the basis of Geneva communique of June 30, 2012," it said.
