Government knew that the Election Commission of Pakistan would declare Kissan Package as the glaring violation of the Code of Conduct of Election rules adding its announcement was based on mala fides of the mandarins and not to address the hardships of the farmers’ community, said Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, President Punjab PPP, in a statement issued from here today.
He said that the government had lived up to its repute as pro-industrialists and anti-farmers adding they see no end to their miseries wrought upon them by the policies of this government being pursued right from the beginning.
He pointed out that the sowing season of the wheat was about to commence but the farmers had no money to purchase seed, fertilizer and other inputs because of their precarious financial condition as they had been bearing the burden of losses during the last four consecutive crops.
He demanded that no import from India be negotiated till such time that the government ensure the provision of facilities to Pakistani farmers as were available to their Indian counterparts.
He demanded that flat rates of electricity should be fixed for the agricultural tube wells like it was done during the watch of the erstwhile government of the PPP adding it would be a relief to the community in the real sense of the word.
He pointed out that the government was not sincere in addressing the problems of the farmers those have multiplied mainly due to the absence of the fixation of support prices of wheat, cotton, sugarcane, rice and potatoes. This is the root cause of the problem and should be tackled in such a way as to ensure attractive and suitable dividends to the farmers of their hard labor, he added.
He urged the government to fix the support price of wheat immediately in a way so that farmers were encouraged to enhance the sowing areas of wheat during this season to keep the fear of wheat shortage at bay in the country.
