Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, President Punjab PPP, in a statement issued from here today, has judged the reduction in the prices of petroleum products by the government as grossly disproportionate to the recommendations of OGRA and to the prices oil in the international market.
The Regulatory Authority recommended Rs.12 reduction per liter in prices of petrol and diesel in view of the prices in the international market of the oil but regretfully the government transferred the benefit only around three to four rupees to the end consumers, he added.
He demanded that the recommendation of OGRA should be implemented fully for the benefit of the people.
He further said that the government had been quite miser in providing even due relief to the people whereas it was quite liberal in extending subsidies of hundreds of billions of rupees to the capitalists at the national exchequer’s expense through the notorious practice of issuance of SROs.
Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo also strongly criticized the government for staggering increase on the tariff of gas both for domestic and industrial consumers that would affect the productivity and the competitiveness of the sector.
He said that the government had levied this tyrannical tariff to meet the conditionality of IMF in order to qualify to get the next tranche of loan adding this capitulation was at the expense of the poor people of the country.
The foreign loans serve the interests of the rulers, capitalists and bureaucrats by way of drawing luxurious perks and privileges and the poor people of the country had to bear the cruel brunt in the form of excessive indirect taxation on the goods and services of their use.
It seems that the government’s appetite to squeeze the poor dry had not satisfied yet as they were more inclined to add to their miseries than providing them relief.
He warned that the government should not test the patience of the people that was already tipping over the edges. Its spill over may erode the ground from underneath of the feet of the incumbent mandarins.
