Pakistan - Senate for ban on foreign funding to madrassas

Accusing the government of failing to take quick action after the Peshawar school terrorist attack, legislators in the Upper House of parliament on Tuesday demanded the government ban foreign funding to those madrassas who were involved in any type of militant training.

They said that after the Peshawar incident, it was right time for the government to “clean” those madrassas who were involved in preparation of jihad in neighbouring countries, especially India and Afghanistan. They said then government must top interference in other countries if it wants to wash out terrorism from the country. Federal Minister for Textile Abbass Khan Afridi claimed that Peshawar school attack is the failure of federal, provincial governments and intelligence agencies, and all parliamentarians were responsible for it.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) central leader Senator Aitzaz Ahsan has asked the government to convene joint session of parliament to discuss issue of terrorism following the massacre of 149 people including 133 children in Peshawar. He demanded this while speaking at the floor of the Senate where lawmakers debated militant attack on Army Public School in Peshawar for third consecutive day. This is right time for action instead of forming committee, which will forward its recommendation after seven days. “The helplessness of government begins when it fail to take action against Lal Masjid chief Maulana Abdul Aziz, who openly supports Taliban,” he said, adding that instead of registering a case against Abdul Aziz, the government registered a case against civil society activists who protested against him over his support to terrorists, he maintained.

He said the government not fear and take bold decisions if it is sincere about rooting out terrorism once for all, Aitizaz Ahsan maintained. He regretted that Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif had openly requested Taliban to stop their activities in Punjab “because both Taliban and Punjab rulers were on same page”. “This hierocracy will not be allowed to continue anymore,” he said, adding that if it is not stopped the nation will face another big incident.

The opposition leader asked why the government was not cleaning the 10% madrassas which the interior minister claimed were involved in terrorist activities. He said that 90% madrassas management should be taken into confidence over the “war on terror”. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Senator Nasreen Jalil said that Jamiat UIema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman should take the lead in offering details of foreign funding to his religious seminaries. She further said that one of the organisers of the Lal Masjid protests in Islamabad Jibran Nasir was receiving threats after registration of a FIR against Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz.

Federal Minister for Textile Abbass Khan Afridi claimed that the world is laughing over us. “I am feeling shame over talking on Peshawar School attack”, he said adding that the bloody game should be stopped in FATA otherwise it will cover the whole country soon. He confessed that the government always speak lie to nation after such terrorist incident. Being a federal minister, he said he was helpless then what will be the situation of ordinary people. The committee will give its recommendations but no action would be taken against militants, he apprehended. He suggested that the government should decide that no other resolution will be presented until removing of militancy from the country on permanent basis. He claimed that military and tribal people can remove these militants in two months time if sincere efforts were made on part of the government.
