Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Tuesday criticised the government’s decision to increase the tax rate in order to enhance tax collection.
Shah said that move would burden the masses furthers. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar announced to raise the tax rate in the country on Monday. “The tax defaulters should be apprehended to make the increase in the tax collection rather than putting more burden on the general public”, Shah advised the government while talking to media. He recalled that former PPP government took the total collection up to Rs.1980 billion from the previous figures 1020 billion and that too without any hike in tax rate. “The present government fixed Rs.2435 billion tax collection for the current fiscal but appears unable to achieve the target”, Opposition Leader noted.
For its failure to collect more taxes, Shah felt that government wants to punish the people by charging them the tax at higher rate. Shah also talked about the increased reliance of government on loans and showed its grave concern over this policy that would be leading towards more trouble in future.
