Gilani announces Rs1,000 increase in minimum wage

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani announced an increase in minimum wages of labourers from Rs7,000 to Rs8000 and a 20 per cent increase in pensions. Gilani also handed over regular appointment letters to employees of Capital Development Authority (CDA), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTCL) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Speaking to a charged crowd during the May Day function at the Convention Centre Islamabad, he also announced an increase in death grants for labourers from Rs150,000 to Rs500,000 and an increase in their children’s wedding allowance from Rs70,000 to Rs100,000. The prime minister also directed the ministry concerned to announce Labour Policy 2012 and Implementation Commission of Industrial Relations Act (IRA-2012). He said that imperialistic forces exploited labourers and workers but despite all their revengeful policies the labour community could not be oppressed.
