The United Nations World Food Program says it urgently needs $257 million to continue to provide critical food assistance to millions of people in Afghanistan.
WFP said Friday it has only half of the money it needs to provide food to more than 7 million Afghans, mainly women and children.
Without more funding, the aid agency says critical supplies of wheat, vegetable oil and other staples will run short by August.
WFP says it will also be forced to scale back feeding more than 500,000 school children by June. The number of children under five who receive specialized nutrition products has already been reduced due to a funding shortfall.
WFP says without immediate support from the international community, it will have exhausted all remaining commodities by August and be forced to suspend some parts of its operation in Afghanistan.
