Facebook was where Pakistan could debate religion. Now it's a tool to punish 'blasphemers'

 and

Taimoor Raza, a 30-year-old Shia Muslim from a “poor but literate” family, was sentenced to death in June by an anti-terrorist court in Pakistan. His crime? Allegedly insulting the prophet Muhammad on Facebook.
It occurred during an online debate with a man who turned out to be an undercover counter-terrorism agent. His death sentence, the first to result from a social media posting, is an extreme example of the Pakistani government’s escalating battle to enforce its blasphemy laws, which criminalize insulting Islam.
Established under British colonial rule, the laws have been criticized by both religious and secular reformers, who argue that they are used to persecute minorities, settle personal scores and stifle debate.
In recent months, Pakistan’s interior minister, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, has increased pressure on Facebook and Twitter to identify individuals suspected of blasphemy. On 7 July, Facebook’s vice-president of public policy, Joel Kaplan, met with Khan to discuss the government’s demand that Facebook either remove blasphemous content or be blocked in the country.
On Monday, Facebook confirmed that it had rejected Pakistan’s demand that new accounts be linked to a mobile phone number – a provision that would make it easier for the government to identify account holders. Currently, opening a Facebook account in Pakistan requires only an email address, while mobile phone users must provide fingerprints to a national database.
That social media would become the means for a government crackdown on free speech is a bitter twist for platforms that claim to want to increase openness and the free flow of ideas.

The advent of social media once heralded an opening for religious debate in Pakistan. Platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Viber allowed individuals in conservative, rural areas to engage in discussions that were once possible only for students and urban intellectuals, unconstrained by the conservative norms of their communities.
“Until recently, social media afforded a measure of privacy where you could discuss the hypocrisy of people whose behavior was loathsome but who wore the thick garb of piety,” said Pervez Hoodbhoy, a prominent academic and activist.
“Now the state is saying that we will track you down wherever you are and however you might want to hide,” Hoodbhoy added. “Pakistan is fast becoming a Saudi-style fascist religious state.”
The problem with engaging in potentially illegal speech on social media, of course, is that online speech leaves evidence.
In 2013, the Pakistan government requested data on 210 users, according to Facebook’s government request report. By 2016, government requests had risen to 2,460 accounts, with Facebook complying with about two-thirds. Facebook declined to comment on how many of these requests involved allegations of blasphemy.
Parents are now telling their children to self-censor on Facebook, Hoodbhoy said, especially in light of the lynching in April of Mashal Khan – a university student who was accused of offending Islam.
Ahmad Waqas Goraya, an activist and blogger, said that the standards for blasphemy had been lowered as the government used anti-blasphemy laws to crack down on dissent.
“What they now call blasphemy was everywhere before,” he said. “They use religion as a political tool. Almost all people detained have been critical of the state and the military.”
Goraya was one of five bloggers abducted for four weeks in January for being critical of the military establishment.
“You see what the problem [for authorities] is with social media. They cannot stop information. It levels the playing field for us,” Goraya said, adding that religious debate on Facebook had “been almost silenced”.
Pakistan is not the only country where Facebook is being asked to either censor content or be blocked. In May, Thailand threatened to block Facebookover pages that violate its lèse-majesté laws, which outlaw any criticism of the royal family.
Vietnam has pushed multinational corporations that do business in the country to stop advertising on Facebook and YouTube unless they remove “toxic” content, according to the Financial Times. A high-level Facebook official, Monika Bickert, met with the Vietnamese government about its concerns in April.
Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has defended the company’s willingness to comply with government censorship requests by advancing “a single guiding principle: we want to give the most voice to the most people”.
In a 2015 Facebook post, Zuckerberg wrote: “Some people say we should ignore government orders requiring us to restrict people’s voice, even if that means the whole service would be blocked in those countries. I don’t think that’s right … If we ignored a lawful government order and then we were blocked, all of these people’s voices would be muted, and whatever content the government believed was illegal would be blocked anyway.”
Goraya, for his part, suspects that Facebook’s motives have more to do with its financial interests than in the “voice” of Pakistanis.
“At the end of the day, all they care about is their business,” he said.
By next year, whether Facebook cooperates might not matter: Pakistan is in the process of rerouting its internet traffic through China, laying a 500-mile fiber optic cable from the China-Pakistan border to Rawalpindi. Some fear the project will lead to a block of Facebook in Pakistan, similar to the one in China. The project is expected to be finished next year.

India revokes passport of fugitive extremist Muslim preacher Zakir Naik

The external affairs ministry has revoked the passport of Zakir Naik, the controversial Islamic preacher wanted in connection with alleged terror-funding and money laundering cases.

"The Mumbai Regional Passport Office has approved the NIA's request to revoke Zakir Naik's passport," a spokesperson for the anti-terror agency said today.

The 51-year-old televangelist, who is currently abroad, is being probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for charges related to terror and money laundering.

The Mumbai-based preacher, who left India on July 1, 2016, came under the lens of security agencies after some terrorists allegedly involved in the attack on a cafe in Dhaka in July last year reportedly claimed they were inspired by his speeches.

Naik had his passport renewed in January last year and it was valid for 10 years.

The NIA had on November 18, 2016, registered a case against Naik at its Mumbai branch under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

His city-based NGO, Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), has already been declared an unlawful association by the Centre.

The controversial preacher has been accused of spreading hatred by his provocative speeches, funding terrorists and laundering several crores of rupees over the years.

Naik, a medical doctor-turned preacher, during his interactions with the Indian media from his haven abroad has repeatedly denied all charges.

He was served a show-cause notice by the passport authorities asking as to why his travel document should not be revoked.

The Interpol was approached against Naik after a year- long probe during which the NIA gathered evidence of his IRF and Peace TV being used to allegedly promote hatred between different religious groups.

Besides banning his NGO, the central government has taken his TV channel off air.

Pakistan - School heads mislead education department by furnishing fake enrolment numbers in Faisalabad District

What a corrupt society, Your Politicians,Army Generals, Police, Judiciary are the reflection of your corrupt society.

FAISALABAD: In an astonishing revelation, the administration and heads of primary, middle and secondary schools across Faisalabad District have been found involved in furnishing fake enrolment numbers to the education department, thus misleading the officials by their false claims of achieving the targets set by the government.
As per the documents and information available with The Express Tribune, the heads of schools of the district from Grade-1 to Grade-12 were given the task by the provincial education department to ensure 98% enrolment of students in their respective schools by May 31, 2017.
As per the target, as many as 2,300 school heads were required to achieve the total strength of 862,253 children in their respective institutions. The headmasters of these schools were further asked to submit complete lists of enrolled schools and students by the given deadline.
However, the reports submitted by the school heads revealed that the strength of the schools in Faisalabad District is 849,428 and they achieved 98.6% target that is in line with the actual target assigned to them.
During compilation of the reports by the local education officials, it transpired that the statements of enrolment contained the figures of ‘ghost students’.
While taking notice of the findings, the local education department approached the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and gave them the task of verification of enrolment statements on the basis of the CNIC numbers of the parents of the enrolled students.

During scanning of the data, the officials disclosed that over 72,000 entries were either fake or wrong and do not match with the original record of Nadra. Therefore, the data could not be verified. Further probe revealed that at least 351 fake entries were found in the statements furnished by the administration of MC High School, Samanabad. Likewise, 285 fake entries were found in Government Girls High School, 190 in the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Khurrianwala while 188 fake entries were found in Government High School, Haji Abad.
When contacted, Education CEO Javed Iqbal Chishti told The Express Tribune, “We have full strength in district schools as per the target but we are short of enrolment in Grade-9 and some other classes due to technical reasons.”
He added in Grade-8, almost 10% students failed to clear the examination which is the main reason of decline in enrolment in Grade-9. The education CEO claimed, “We have achieved the target of enrolment campaign by almost 81% and hopefully the remaining target would be achieved shortly.” Chishti maintained, “In Grade-1, the education department achieved 16% more than the actual target in the district although the target assigned was the highest in the whole province.”
To a question about ghost students’ enrolment, he pointed out, “There are some fake entries and we are taking action against those who are responsible for such acts.” He said that anomalies found during verification emerged on the basis of some different entries in the record of the education department and Nadra.”
The education official elaborated that at the time of admission, some entries of ID cards, names, addresses and other particulars were not properly recorded so we could not confirm that the name of the students, which were not verified from Nadra, were ghost students.
“However, we are making efforts to correct all such anomalies and I have directed the school heads to correct the record of the enrollments within two weeks,” he remarked.

Pakistan - The Ghost Of Education

Education is the biggest agent of change in any society. The importance of education can be gauged from the fact that under the charter of United Nations it is declared a universal right. The Constitution of Pakistan, too, makes it the duty of the state to facilitate its citizens in getting education. Article 25A of the Constitution states, “The State shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age five to sixteen years in such manner as may be determined by law.”
Nonetheless, it is clear that the state is not doing its duty. The concerned department does not follow the rules and protocols of ensuring quality education for the people. Two separate stories in newspapers on the public sector education show a very ugly picture of corrupt practices and substandard quality in the field of education. In a joint survey carried out by the Balochistan government and UNICEF for tracking down ghost schools across the province, over 1500 schools were identified as only existing on paper. The survey also revealed that 25 schools were without buildings. There are over 2000 shelter-less schools. In KP, the Awami National Party (ANP), on Monday, submitted an adjournment motion in the provincial assembly for having a debate over the poor performance of the public sector schools after the recently declared results of matriculation exams.
Governments in both the provinces have declared an emergency in the field of education once they entered office. They have made tall claims in improving the facilities and quality of education. However, the recently held survey in Balochistan and results of matriculation boards’ examination in KP expose the poor performance of the provincial governments. After considering the performance of both the governments in the field of education, it would not be wrong to assume that the claims made served the purpose of advertisement for the parties in power.
Education is a provincial subject, and it follows that the provincial governments are to blame in large part for the oversight. It is almost the fourth year that these governments are in power. Not finding the right direction is shameful.

Pakistan - FOUR SHIA MUSLIMS INCLUDING A WOMAN MARTYRED NEAR MASTUNG

At least four Shia Muslims belonging to the Quetta-based Hazara Shia community were martyred when takfiri terrorists of the banned outfit opened fire on their vehicle near Balochistan's Mastung area on Wednesday, police sources said.
Balochistan has been experiencing incidents of violence and targeted killings since more than a decade. More than 1,400 incidents targeting the Shia including Hazara have taken place in the province during the past 15 years.
While sectarian terrorism in Balochistan has disproportionately targeted the Shia Hazara community, easily identifiable because of their distinctive physical appearance, other Shias — especially pilgrims travelling to and from Iran — have not been spared either.

A woman is among the slain victims. According to police sources, the incident was an act of targeted killing. The terrorists fled after carrying out the attack at Choto area near Mastung. Police and other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) personnel reached the site and started an investigation into the incident.
The martyrs were identified as Murtaza, Mohammad Asif, Ghulam Sarwar and Rukhsana Bibi. They were residents of Hazara Town Quetta. Abdul Sattar, driver of the vehicle was also injured in the attack. He hails from Hyderabad (Sindh).
Balochistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti strongly condemned the incident and termed it "against the social and tribal norms of Balochistan".

#Pakistan - SARTAJ AZIZ FAILS TO ALLAY CONCERNS OF SENATE CHAIRMAN AGAINST SAUDI MILITARY ALLIANCE

Once again, Senators including Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani raised questions about Pakistan’s role in Saudi-led military alliance and appointment of former army chief Raheel Sharif in that alliance, on the first day of the new session of Senate called on opposition’s requisition. Sartaj Aziz, the adviser to the prime minister on foreign affairs failed to allay concerns of Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani and members from the opposition benches over the government move to allow the former army chief to proceed to Saudi Arabia as commander of the proposed force whose composition and ToRs were elusive.

In his policy statement, Sartaj said the government was still waiting for Riyadh to share ToRs of the proposed alliance of Muslim countries, Saudi’s announced to conjure, ostensibly to fight terrorism.
Aziz said ToRs of this proposed military ‘coalition’ were to be discussed and finalised by defence ministers of more than 40 countries, in a huddle which has not taken place yet.
He failed to allay concerns of Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani and members from the opposition benches over the government move to allow the former army chief to proceed to Saudi Arabia as commander of the proposed force whose composition and ToRs were elusive.
“If ToRs are yet to be finalised, how did your former army chief proceed to lead this coalition force. In case its ToRs did not suit Pakistan, what would be your strategy then, would you call back Raheel Sharif,” questioned the Senate chairman.
“There are no troops in this coalition. This coalition is different than the one in the ongoing war in Yemen. As per our information, former army chief is not commanding any force. Probably he [Raheel Sharif] will be working in some advisory role to draft ToRs and how to tackle extremism,” Aziz said, when confronted with a volley of questions by the Senate chairman.
Aziz tried to obfuscate the matter, saying Saudi Arabia had been using services of our retired military officers in the past as well and they had been calling Raheel Sharif for more than a year.
“Those retired officers were of major or colonel level. Here, it is the question of a former army chief of your country. He has all the knowledge of your nuclear arsenal. How can you say, this will not affect your foreign policy,” confronted the chairman.
The long due policy statement of the adviser raised questions over the government’s claimed obliviousness over the proposed Saudi-led military alliance’s matter.
He was supposed to appear before the Senate last month, but due to rapidly changing situation in the Middle East and his busy schedule, he could not make his statement during the last session.
Opposition parties clubbed the matter with their heavily loaded agenda for this session which has been actually called to discuss the situation after Panamagate Joint Investigation Team submitted its report over Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family’s malfeasance.
Taking part in the discussion on ToRs of the Riyadh-based military alliance, Senator Farhatullah Babar questioned whether the premature announcement by Raheel Sharif to not accept any extension in service 10 months before the actual date of retirement without even being offered such extension was intended to assure the Saudis that he will be available for service in the military alliance.
He said that if it indeed was the case then a whole set of new and pertinent questions would have to be answered.
Many will wonder whether this premature announcement about not accepting any extension in tenure was in any way linked to the job in the military alliance waiting in the wings, he said.
About support to the militant groups, he said that the FO was quick to welcome the recent decision of the UN to list Jamaat-ul Ahrar as a terrorist outfit, but on the other hand has been asking China to block UN’s move to sanction Jaish-e-Muhammad, whenever such a move came up before the world body.
Besides Leader of Opposition Aitzaz Ahsen, senators Azam Swati of PTI, Col (retd) Tahir Mashahdi of MQM, Ilyas Bilor of ANP, Usman Kakar of PkMAP, Taj Haider, Sherry Rehman, Sehar Kamran and others spoke on the subject, highlighting failures of the country on the foreign policy front during successive regimes, especially the incumbent government. They warned the government to not become party of any move which could foment sectarian divide in the country.
Adviser Aziz also briefed the Upper House on recent visit of delegation of US Arms Services Committee led by Senator John McCain. The visit was for assessing situation to enhance troops in Afghanistan. He claimed Pakistan conveyed to visiting US delegation that there was no military solution to Afghan issue and there was a need to reactivate quadrilateral mechanism that involved Pakistan, Afghanistan, US and China.

Pakistan among countries providing 'safe havens' to terrorists: US

The US on Wednesday for the first time in recent years came down heavily on Pakistan for aiding terror groups JeM and LeT including providing safe havens to terrorists, an action described by India as a vindication of its long-standing position on the menace of cross-border terrorism in the region.

The US administration’s position was reflected in its annual ‘Country Report on Terrorism’. This comes, according to the report, after Indian and US leaders directed officials to identify new areas of collaboration through the July US-India Counterterrorism Joint Working Group, applauded finalisation of a bilateral arrangement to facilitate the sharing of terrorism screening information, and called upon Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of terrorist attacks against India to justice.

“The segments in South and Central Asia in the US State Department’s Country Reports on Terrorism 2016 vindicate India’s long-standing position on the menace of cross-border terrorism in our region,” senior sources told ET.

The State Department listed Pakistan as one of the safe havens of terrorism. In its report to the Congress, the State Department said in 2016, India and the United States pledged to strengthen cooperation against terrorist threats from groups including al-Qaeda, the ISIS, JeM, LeT and D-Company (Dawood Ibrahim’s group), including through greater collaboration on designations at the UN.

“The (Pakistan) government did not take any significant action against LeT or JeM, other than implementing an ongoing ban against media coverage of their activities. LeT and JeM continued to hold rallies, raise money, recruit, and train in Pakistan,” according to the report.

The US comments in the report comes close on the heels of designation of Hizbul Chief Syed Salahuddin as a global terrorist. “Afghanistan, in particular, continued to experience aggressive and coordinated attacks by the Afghan Taliban, including the affiliated Haqqani Network (HQN) and other insurgent and terrorist groups. A number of these attacks were planned and launched from safe havens in Pakistan...,” observed the report.

Pakistan is a member of the Asia Pacific Group on Money Laundering, a Financial Action Task Force (FATF)-style regional body. Pakistan criminalizes terrorist financing. However, there has not been a significant number of prosecutions or convictions of terrorist financing cases reported by Pakistan in recent years due to a lack of resources and capacity within investigative and judicial bodies.

The report comes close on the heels of US imposing tougher conditions for reimbursement of defence funding to Pakistan.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Tuesday directed Punjab chapter of the party to take out ‘Go Nawaz Go’ rallies in every district of the province to pressurize Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to step down following a damning report by the joint investigation team (JIT) against the ruling Sharif family in the Panama Papers case.

Speaking at the PPP Punjab’s executive committee meeting here at the Zardari House, the party chief said Nawaz Sharif had lost all credibility following report by the JIT held him guilty of corruption and money laundering.

Quran Khawani was also held on the death anniversary of Shahnawaz Bhutto.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari chaired PPP Gilgit-Baltistan meeting

Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had said that it is great injustice to Gilgit-Baltistan that it has not been included in economic Corridor and PPP will not remain silent on the issue.
Chairman PPP said this while addressing a meeting of PPP Gilgit-Baltistan at Zardari House Islamabad on Wednesday. He said that elections in the country should be held on the same day including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan and this will strengthen our country.
He asked Nawaz government not to target the people of Gilgit-Baltistan because they still love Sharif Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Nawaz government has totally ignored the area in development projects and it is very unfortunate that the projects initiated by PPP government have also been halted.
He congratulated PPP Gilgit-Baltistan for winning bye-elections through hard work and dedication. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari demanded inclusion of Gilgit-Baltistan in economic Corridor.
The meeting was attended by PPP provincial President Amjad Hussain, Jamil Ahmed, Zafar Iqbal, Imran Nadeem, Sadia Danish, Muhammad Musa, Muhammad Ali Akhtar and new elected MLA Javed Hussain.

Separate attacks target Pakistan paramilitary force, kill 3

By Riaz Khan

Separate bombings targeted members of Pakistan’s paramilitary border force on Monday, killing at least three troops and wounding eight, officials said.
In the first attack, a Taliban suicide bomber riding on a motorcycle hit a Frontier Corps vehicle in Peshawar, near the Afghan border, killing two troops and wounding seven. A few hours later, a second bomb struck in southwestern Chaman province, also on the border with Afghanistan, killing one soldier and wounding another.
Police superintendent Imran Malik said the Peshawar attack happened on the edge of the Khyber tribal area.
Pakistan’s Tehrik-e-Taliban, an umbrella for Pakistani Taliban factions, was behind the attack, according to a statement by the militants’ spokesman, Mohammad Khurasani.
The attack came a day after the Pakistan army announced it had launched an operation in the Khyber tribal region to rout Islamic State militants it said were operating in the area. The Islamic State in Khorasan as it is known in Afghanistan and Pakistan is based in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province which abuts Pakistan and the Khyber tribal region.
The local Islamic State affiliate emerged a few years ago, mainly from disenchanted Taliban fighters espousing the IS’ ideology.
The paramilitary force, known as the Frontier Corps, is the front-line force battling militants in Pakistan’s tribal regions stretching hundreds of kilometers (miles) along its border with Afghanistan.
In the Chaman attack, police said one soldier was killed and another wounded but details were scarce because of the remoteness of the area. No one immediately took responsibility for that explosion.

Chinese media denounces ‘groundless Pakistan news reports’ on death of Indian soldiers along Sikkim border

China’s state-run media rejects Pakistani news reports claiming that 158 Indian soldiers were killed in attacks by the People’s Liberation Army.

China’s official media on Tuesday “denounced groundless” reports by a section of Pakistani news outlets claiming the death of 158 Indian soldiers in attacks by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) amid a military standoff along the border with Sikkim.
According to Dunya News, a 24-hours Urdu language news service in Pakistan, the Indian soldiers were killed, and several others were injured, on Monday in a Chinese rocket attack across the border.
India’s external affairs ministry on Monday denied the report, calling it “malicious propaganda”.
A day later, China’s official and mainstream media denied the report.
“Chinese mainstream media outlets on Tuesday denounced Pakistani media’s “groundless” report, which claims that over 150 Indian soldiers were killed in Sikkim due to a Chinese rocket attack,” the People’s Daily online said.
“According to an investigative report released by the People’s Daily on Tuesday, the Chinese embassy in India had noticed the report and has denounced its authenticity. Some Pakistani media outlets claim that the fake news is based on unverified information from social media and the Internet,” the PD article said.
The nationalistic tabloid Global Times also published a report on Tuesday, calling the Pakistani media report “groundless and fake.”
Several other news portals on social media published reports, denying the story.
A report in the Chinese version of the Global Times pointed out that the photographs carried with Pakistani media story were from “…conflict in the Kashmir region.”
On Monday, MEA spokesperson Gopal Baglay said “such reports are utterly baseless, malicious and mischievous. No cognisance should be taken of them by responsible media”.
Border troops from India and China are locked in standoff near the Sikkim border for about a month. But it has not escalated into exchange of fire.
China has blamed New Delhi for the ongoing Donglang (Doklam) impasse, accusing Indian soldiers of trespass and preventing Chinese soldiers from building a road in the region, which is also claimed by Bhutan.
Beijing wants India to withdraw its troops from Donglang before the two sides can open talks. New Delhi says the road, if built, will have serious security implications for India.

Pakistan - Mashal Denied Justice

We are one unfortunate nation that feels pride in celebrating murderers. Whether Ghazi Alamdin, Aamir Cheema or Mumtaz Qadri, all of them are celebrated heroes of our people. Once such individuals are dead, society constructs myths to turn them into saints and pious people. People frequently use the word un-Islamic, when they fail to convince their opponents logically or politically. It is this way of looking at things that have led to the grotesque killing of Mashal Khan on his university campus.
More than forty days have passed since the JIT report on the case has been presented and the authorities have failed to take proper action against the responsible ones as per the recommendations of the JIT report. It is certainly shameful that no justice is given to Mashal even after he is no more living. The perpetrators of his killing are roaming free on the premises of university. The report clearly states that Mashal’s murder was premeditated. Mashal was accused of blasphemy to get away with his murder. Failing to take appropriate action against the responsible ones is beyond one’s comprehension. There is no reason why the university’s administration is reluctant to act according to the recommendations of the JIT report.
Failing to act upon the recommendations of the report suggests that our state and its institutions cannot ensure the supremacy of rule of law, and that these JITs are just a way to delay justice enough to make people forget. Societies fail to progress and develop if the law does not rule supreme. A society is certainly a declining one if people who are wronged, fail to seek justice. It is heart-wrenching to observe criminal silence on people’s part whenever such injustices occur.
People lack the patience to listen to any dissenting voice. The state, with aid from the intelligentsia, needs to address the issue of growing intolerance. Likewise, we need to realise the importance of maintaining the rule of law supreme. There are very few religious scholars who can understand the importance of a pluralistic society and promote non-violence. If the above-mentioned issues are not dealt with firmly, we will witness more cases of mob justice.

PAKISTAN'S PM FACING SUPREME COURT OVER PANAMA PAPERS

Pakistan’s Supreme Court began hearings this week on a case that may decide the fate of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, more than a year after revelations first emerged about links between his family’s wealth and the Panama Papers investigation.
The revelations led to protests in Pakistan and sparked calls from the political opposition for Sharif’s resignation.  Sharif and his family deny wrongdoing.
In April, a Pakistani court narrowly rejected a motion to disqualify Sharif as prime minister. Instead, it established a joint investigation into reports that linked Sharif’s children to valuable property in central London held through offshore companies.
This month, the joint investigation team issued a 254-page report. It accused the Sharifs, one of the wealthiest families in south Asia, of hiding assets, perjury and forgery.
Included in the report was the finding that Sharif’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz, potentially falsified ownership documents that were dated 2006 but written in a font that was not commercially available until 2007. The resulting furore trended on social media under the hashtag #fontgate.
“The report is a pack of lies,” Sharif said in response.
The Supreme Court will now decide how to respond to the report, which could involve removing Sharif from office or ordering his trial on charges of corruption. Sharif is expected to be summoned to appear before the court in the coming days or weeks.
Elsewhere, repercussions from the Panama Papers continue.
On June 28, U.S. lawmakers introduced bills to curb the abuse of domestic shell companies. Advocates argue that U.S. shell companies can be used to enable criminal behavior, including financing terrorists.
“Just over a year ago, journalists worldwide began publishing the Panama Papers — exposing global webs of anonymous shell companies used to facilitate all forms of corruption and criminal activity,” said Gary Kalman, the executive director of the FACT Coalition.
“While Panama received all the unwelcome attention, U.S. laws are no better.  In many ways, it is easier to hide behind an anonymous company in this country than Panama or any other in the world.”
Earlier this month, in France, a cardboard packaging executive received a one-year suspended sentenceand a $2 million fine after reports by ICIJ partner, Premiére Lignes’ Cash Investigation, that he hid more than $20 million offshore.
On Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a $144 million civil suit in relation to allegations of corruption involving Nigeria’s former oil minister and business associates. The DOJ described one company set up by Mossack Fonseca, Earnshaw Associates Limited, spending tens of millions of dollars to buy luxury real estate in New York City and an $80 million yacht.
“I spoke to you several times about your general behavior, acquisition of assets, etc., asking you to be a bit more careful,” said the former oil minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke to Kolawole Aluko, in recorded telephone conversations disclosed in the court filing.
ICIJ wrote about the links between Alison-Madueke and Aluko as part of the Panama Papers investigation in 2016.
