Pakistan - KIDNAPPING OF NASIR SHIRAZI DECIDED AT A HIGH-LEVEL MEETING OF PUNJAB GOVT'S BIGWIGS

The conspiracy for government-sponsored kidnapping of MWM’s deputy secretary general Nasir Shirazi was finalised at a high-level meeting of the Punjab government’s influential heavyweights including Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah.

Sources disclosed that a high-level meeting was held in Lahore where Shahbaz, his son Hamza Shahbaz, Rana Sana, former IG Police Punjab Mushtaq Sukhera and others hatched the conspiracy against Shia party Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen leadership over their alliance and support to Sunni scholar Dr Tahirul Qadri and his party Pakistan Awami Tehreek.
Punjab Chief Minister and Law Minister are scared of the Justice Baqir Najafi report of inquiry into Lahore Model Town Tragedy in which supporters of Qadri were murdered by police on the orders of higher authorities of the government. Shahbaz and Rana Sana were blamed for the Lahore Model Town massacre. The petition filed by Nasir Shirazi, deputy secretary general, MWM, also posed a threat to the future of Rana Sanaullah because Shirazi had sought his disqualification.
Hence, they tried to kill two birds with one stone by ordering kidnapping of Nasir Shirazi because he was petitioner against Rana Sanaullah and remained in close touch with all the political parties. Police officer Rai Tahir was assigned to oversee the kidnapping.
However, MWM leadership and their supporters are defeating their plot by using legal rights and democratic rights to deal with the situation. Shirazi’s kidnapping has evoked countrywide protest against the Punjab government and security agencies run under them.

Pakistani teenage girl forcibly stripped naked - Warped ‘honour’ Listen

In an incident that has become depressingly familiar in Pakistan, a teenage girl was forcibly stripped naked and made to walk through the streets of her village near Dera Ismail Khan. The ‘punishment’ was imposed on the girl because her brother had reportedly been romantically involved with a member of the offender’s family. A panchayat, which included the tehsil nazim, had earlier fined the brother Rs105,000 for his ‘infraction’ but that wasn’t enough for the perpetrators, who felt the need to torture and humiliate a 16-year-old girl. They then went even further by concocting a case against the girl’s family so as not to be punished for this crime. Needless to say, the main culprits are the nine men who brutalised the girl and they should be dealt with harshly in accordance with the law. Eight of them have now been arrested and remanded into custody. But there is plenty of blame to go around and the police too should not escape criticism. They agreed to file the false charges against the victim’s family even though they had to know the motivations behind them. The only reason they have taken action now is because of the media attention on the case. Even now, some reports say the family may have been forced to change their story since they now claim that the girl was not paraded in the streets but was assaulted in the home of one of the perpetrators.
Beyond the individuals involved and law enforcement, though, we need to ponder why such incidents keep repeating themselves. Many have decried the concept of collective punishment, often upheld by jirgas and panchayats, but the real issue here is how warped notions of ‘honour’ lead to punishments being meted out to women and children for the alleged crimes of men in their families or tribes. That these punishments are often sexual in nature shows that the aim is to assert a power dynamic where men can treat women as disposable property to be used at their leisure. Such crimes usually go unpunished because the police, reflecting the society they serve, do not consider the violation of women to be a transgression. The political class upholds the status quo by serving in jirgas and panchayats even though they have long been declared illegal. They even justify the crimes by claiming they are a part of tribal or rural tradition. But the gross mistreatment of women is not restricted on the basis of geography and wealth. ‘Honour’ killings, rape and sexual humiliation are equally prevalent throughout the country. Changing that mindset cannot happen just by introducing new laws or responding to a media outcry; it will require mass societal change.

Pakistan second-worst on Global Gender Gap index

The World Economic Forum placed Pakistan as the second worst country on gender equality in its Global Gender Gap index released on Thursday.
The index placed Pakistan 143rd out of 144 countries, worst in the South Asian region that has an average remaining gender gap of 34% as noted by the index. Bangladesh, ranked at 47, is the only country in the region to have made the top 50 whereas India is at 108 after dropping 21 notches compared to its previous position. Maldives ranked 106, Sri Lanka 109, Nepal 111 and Bhuttan 143.

The top 10 performing countries are Iceland – having closed nearly 88% of its gap, it has been the world’s most gender-equal country for nine years – Norway, Finland, Rwanda, Sweden, Nicaragua, Slovenia, Ireland, New Zealand and the Philippines.
Pakistan scored 0.546 on a scale where 1.0 score represents parity and 0 as imparity. The country’s female/male population sex ratio is recorded at 1.06. The index notes country’s widening the gender gap over the decade as it ranked 112 out 115 in the year 2006. In the 2017 index, Pakistan only beats Yemen and the war-torn Syria ranks ahead of Pakistan.
The index offers detailed breakdown of the rank in the following categories:
Economic participation and opportunity: 143
  • Labour force participation: 139
  • Wage equality for similar work: 115
  • Estimated earned income: 139
  • Legislators, senior officials and managers: 125
  • Professional and technical workers: 122
Educational attainment: 136

  • Literacy rate: 127
  • Enrolment in primary education: 127
  • Enrolment in secondary education: 134
  • Enrolment in tertiary education: 106
Health and survival: 140
  • Sex ratio at birth: 139
  • Health life expectancy: 137
Political empowerment: 95
  • Women in parliament: 75
  • Women in ministerial positions: 139
  • Years with female head of state (last 50): 28
Pakistan has shown only a slight improvement towards the educational attainment while in all other areas i.e. economic participation and opportunity, health and survival and political empowerment, it has worsened over the decade. The country ranked 135th in 2013, 141st in 2014 and 143rd in 2015, then again in 2016 and 2017.
This is how Pakistan’s comparison with India looks like:
The index notes the year 2017 as the slowest in the decade which otherwise saw progress in closing the gender gap. It notes that the decade of slow but steady progress in closing the gap came to a halt in the year 2017 with the gap looking most widened since the World Economic Forum published its first index in the year 2006.
With the current progress to closing the global gender gap stands at 68% and at this pace it will take 217 years to closing this gap.
“We are moving from the era of capitalism into the era of talentism. Competitiveness on a national and on a business level will be decided more than ever before by the innovative capacity of a country or a company. Those will succeed best, who understand to integrate women as an important force into their talent pool,” said Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman, World Economic Forum.

PPP announces countrywide protest against hike in petrol, diesel prices

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has announced countrywide protest against the recent hike in prices of all petroleum products.
PPP will stage demonstrations outside press clubs in every district headquarter across the country on Sunday, according to PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira. He called PPP workers to participate in protests in large numbers.
The recent hike in the prices of petrol and diesel has drawn strong criticism from the opposition, including the PPP with its chairman deploring the government’s decision to increase the prices.
He termed the hike as a vengeful action against the people reeling under poverty. He demanded that the government should immediately take back increase in prices of petroleum products; otherwise PPP would launch a protest campaign.
Earlier on Nov 1, the federal government revised prices of all petroleum products for the month of November.
A notification of the petroleum ministry said the fuel prices have been increased to keep up with the trend of hike in crude oil prices in the global market.
The petroleum ministry has enhanced the price of light diesel oil (LDO) by Rs three per litre and that of kerosene oil by Rs 5.19 per litre. The price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been hiked by Rs 5.19 per litre and petrol by Rs 2.49 per litre, the government announced.
The new price of HSD has now been fixed at Rs 84.59 per litre, while that of petrol is Rs 75.99 per litre. The new price of kerosene is Rs 53.19 per litre while the new price of LDO stands at Rs 47 per litre.
