Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to face inquiry for corruption

An anti-corruption investigation commission has ordered Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to appear before the commission for an inquiry related to the alleged graft charges against him and his family members, as was revealed in the Panama Papers leak. It may be recalled that in April, the Supreme Court in Pakistan had ordered a joint investigation team of anti-corruption officials, along with the powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence, to investigate the claims and submit a report within 60 days.

Pakistan’s information and broadcast minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has confirmed the inquiry being ordered by the anti-corruption investigation commission. “Yes, the government has received a letter by the Joint Investigation Team in which he has been directed to appear before this committee and he will appear in front of them,” said Aurangzeb. Meanwhile, the letter has leaked on social media platforms. As per the letter, Sharif will have to appear in person before the commission on June 15. Sharif has also been asked to bring all relevant documents.
Famous cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan and his Tehreek-i-Insaf party are asking that Sharif should resign till the investigations are completed.
