Hillary Clinton Stands With President Obama And Applauds His Executive Actions On Guns

By: Jason Easley

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is standing with President Obama and supporting his executive actions to reduce gun violence.

In a statement, the Democratic frontrunner said:

When I came out with my proposals for common sense gun safety measures, I did say that in the absence of Congressional action, I would use executive authority to go as far as would be possible under the law and I applaud the President for taking a hard look at that and I believe he will take some actions to require more gun sellers to do background checks,” Clinton said of the anticipated proposal.

Clinton warned: “I know that a Republican president would delight in the very first day, reversing executive orders that President Obama has made, including this one that we expect him to make.”

….

Throughout this campaign and her career, Clinton has stood up to the gun lobby. She has called for additional steps to strengthen background checks including comprehensive federal background check legislation that closes the “Charleston Loophole.” She would repeal the gun industry’s immunity protection for irresponsible gun manufacturers and dealers and expand protections to keep hands out of domestic abusers, the severely mentally ill and suspected terrorists.

Former Sec. of State Clinton has made combatting gun violence a key piece of her campaign. What is interesting is that Clinton is also positioning herself as the candidate to trust with President Obama’s legacy. The Clinton campaign clearly understands that their path to the White House is the same as the one that Obama followed.
Clinton has done an excellent job of appealing to voters who supported Obama. As she often states, her first term will not be an Obama third term, but she is going to protect and build upon the hard earned gains of the Obama years.
There is a real sense of continuity and unity in the Democratic Party that is nowhere to be found on the Republican side. Much of the credit for the smooth Democratic campaign belongs to Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders for not engaging in the ugly and divisive campaigning that is tearing the Republican Party to pieces.
If Hillary Clinton has her way, the President’s executive actions will be the first step towards passing legislation to combat gun violence. If voters want a president who does something about mass shootings and gun violence, their best and only options are running for the Democratic nomination.
