Prelate: Christians are not the only group targeted in Pakistan

The president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Pakistan said in an interview that Christians are not the sole victims of persecution in the predominantly Sunni Muslim nation.
“The persecution we are witnessing in Pakistan is not specifically targeted at Christians,” Archbishop Joseph Coutts of Karachi told La Stampa’s Vatican Insider. “A few days ago there was an attack on a Shiite mosque. The places being hit are schools, hospitals, churches, markets: all easy targets. The challenge to the country is being posed by groups that reject democracy and want to establish a theocracy.”
“Last Sunday 22 March in Karachi, in what was a highly symbolic gesture, Muslim faithful formed a human chain around our cathedral as a sign of solidarity and protection,” he added. “Next Friday we Christians will form a big group and do the same around a Shiite mosque. These gestures strengthen interreligious ties.”
