Days after a Christian couple was killed by an angry mob for allegedly desecrating the Koran, the Pakistan Hindu Council has proposed the establishment of an active committee at the federal level under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to prevent atrocities against minorities.
The decision was unanimously endorsed in an urgent meeting called by the executive body of the council which also assigned Member National Assembly Dr. Ramesh Kumar Vankwani the task of gathering support from other representative parties, reported the Dawn.
The meeting chaired by Chela Ram Kewlani condemned the brutal killing of a Christian couple in Punjab and registered protest over increasing attacks on minorities and forced conversions.
Kewlani said that the minorities in Pakistan were still as vulnerable as they were one and a half years ago. He added that kidnapping of Hindu girls, forced conversions and marriages are issues that are regularly faced by Hindus mainly due to an absence of a Hindu marriage registration act.
The council urged Sharif and provincial chief ministers to implement effective and practical legislation to protect minorities and stressed on the need to formulate interfaith harmony and Hindu marriage laws.
