Pakistan: ANP leader gunned down in Peshawar

Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday shot dead an Awami National Party (ANP) leader in Peshawar’s Kohati area, police said. Anwarul Haq was shot dead at his shop, the police told media. He was a member of the ANP’s district organising committee in Peshawar. Senior ANP leaders, including Mian Iftikhar Hussain, participated in a protest demonstration with workers blocking the GT Road for traffic to protest Haq’s assassination. Police was unable to say what might be the reason behind the attack. However, the ANP leaders were unanimous in terming it a target killing. The protesters carried black flags and shouted slogans against the provincial government while demanding the immediate arrest of Haq’s murderers. Meanwhile, police recovered two bodies, packed in gunny bags, from a drain in Hayatabad area of Peshawar, while two teachers were murdered in Hangu District. The bodies of a man and a woman were found from a drain after the Bomb Disposal Squad checked the suspicious bags. “It appears the victims were tortured before being shot dead,” police said. Also, gunmen on Tuesday killed two schoolteachers in Hangu District, police said. “Gunmen on motorcycles opened fire at two teachers of government high school. One died on the spot, while the other died in hospital,” DPO Iftikhar Ahmed told AFP.
