Public protests against government policy take place in France
Activists of a few radical socio-political groups of the conservative orientation held meetings of protest in French cities on Saturday. The meetings were aimed against the current government’s policy. The largest actions took place in Lille and Toulouse. Random clashes with police also occurred.
According to information from the Interior Ministry, in Toulouse the mass protests were attended both by supporters of Day of Anger and also their political opponents - antifascists. Clashes between the demonstrators and police occurred in the downtown area. The AFP reports that all in all, about 300 people took part in the protests, nine of them were detained. Six policemen were slightly injured during the clashes.
About 120 people took part in the protests in the downtown area of Lille. They expressed discontent with lax control over immigration. In addition, the protesters demanded President Holland’s and new Prime Minister Valls’ resignation. They also expressed displeasure with the European Union’s policy.
An action of protest against police violence was held in Paris. About 200 people took part in it. Most of them were relatives of those who were killed or seriously injured due to police misconduct.
Day of Anger will also be held in Lyons and Paris today. The previous action of this kind took place in January. It gathered about 20,000 people and ended with mass street disorders.
