Second death anniversary of Begum Nusrat Bhutto today
LAHORE: The second death anniversary of Begum Nusrat Bhutto-- former chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)--- the wife of former PM Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto and the mother of former PM Benazir Bhuitto, is being observed today (Wednesday).
The day will start with Quran Khawani on her shrine at Garhi Khuda Bux. PPP leaders and Parliamentarians will offer prayers and place floral wreaths on her grave. PPP has also chalked out various programmes to mark the Day.
Begum Nusrat Bhutto was born in 1929 in Isfahan, Iran. Before migrating to Pakistan, she was educated at the University of Isfahan where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Humanities in 1950.
After returning to Pakistan in the late 1980s, she served two terms as a Member of Parliament to the National Assembly from the constituency of Larkana, Sindh. Begum Nusrat Bhutto rose to political prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when she led protests and demonstrations against military dictatorships and the nation lovingly started calling her ‘Madar-e-Millat.’
PPP leader Naveed Chaudhry reminiscing Begum Nusrat Bhutto’s contribution said that she was the one who laid foundation of the PPP women wing, she always lived with the party workers and won the hearts and minds of not only her own party men but received laurels from even the adversaries.
Former PPP ‘jiala’ and presently Punjab law minister, Rana Sanaullah said that Nusrat Bhutto gave unforgettable sacrifices for the cause of democracy in the country. She not only lost her husband Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto, who was hanged and then her sons Shahnawaz Bhutto and Mir Mutuza Bhutto were murdered making her life a full tragedy, he said.
