#Pakistan - Shaheed Benazir Bhutto lived for the people

It has been ten years since Mohtarma Shaheed Benazir Bhutto left us, leaving a huge gap in the political landscape of Pakistan. But Shaheed BB will forever illuminate our hearts through the light of the memories she has left behind. As today marks a decade of her shahadat, I want to share the precious memories of Shaheed BB with you and create a pathway of light all around the world through each person reading these words.
Shaheed BB was internationally recognised for her personality and political wisdom. British Prime Minister Theresa May, while addressing the General Assembly in the United Nations, commemorated Shaheed BB and shared their time spent together at the Oxford University. BB played a significant role in arranging the marriage of Mrs. Theresa May. Shaheed BB was a strong advocate of humanity and democracy. Her brave stance against terrorism gained international recognition. “Benazir Bhutto Leadership Programme” was launched at the world-renowned Harvard University. These facts are a testament to the lasting impact that Shaheed BB has had in the fields of politics and academia. Even today her name enjoys immense respect in the world. For this reason she is still living among us after a decade of her shahadat.
In 2007, Mohtarma Shaheed Benazir Bhutto announced her return to Pakistan from London. She was aware of the threat to her life. Despite the perceived danger to her life, General Musharaf refused to guarantee her safety during the reconciliation process. When BB was warned about the looming threat to her life, she replied, “Life and death are in the hands of God. Today, Pakistan is facing an existential threat and I am going to Pakistan for democracy, for the rule of the people and to save Pakistan. Fear of death cannot stop me.” She decided to return to Pakistan on October 18, 2007.
Upon her return to Karachi on October 18, 2007, the truck carrying her was targeted with a suicide attack. This attack was a clear ramification of General Musharaf’s refusal to vouch for BB’s safety. The attack confirmed Shaheed BB’s reservations about the rigging of the upcoming elections at that time and the extent to which the government dared to go. At the same time, BB was also determined to expose the plan of election rigging and to challenge the anti-democratic forces, even if she had to sacrifice her life.
Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed was a great political leader. The people of Pakistan showered her with their love. On international level, she was considered as one of the most popular leaders of the subcontinent. It is true that BB was a phenomenal and indeed Benazir, that is, one of a kind lady in the Muslim World. She fought a long struggle against the military dictatorship only for the democratic rights of her people. The history of Pakistan is a witness to the difficulties and atrocities faced by Shaheed BB for her people. She believed the centre of power should rest with the people and faced house-arrests and exiles. The people were fully aware of Shaheed BB’s fight for their rights. They knew she was her strength and they were her strength and together, they would make Pakistan a force to be reckoned with on the international level. The realms of power shook with fear at the strength represented by Shaheed BB.
When BB returned after the second exile, her popularity was at its peak that also matched the fear of her opponents. These forces took their revenge and on December 27, 2007 Benazir Bhutto succumbed to shahadat in Liaqat Bagh. Despite finishing her physical existence, her enemies failed to extinguish the light of love that glowed in the hearts of the people for Shaheed BB. She was a considerate person and deeply cared for the welfare of the poor. Her love for humanity was indeed a beautiful aspect of her personality. It was for this reason that every eye in the country glistened with tears and every house-hold was submerged in a state of gloom at the death of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto .
Shaheed BB had a charismatic personality. Whoever met her once became her follower and supporter for life-time. I have had the privilege of knowing her for about thirty years. I witnessed the beginning of her political career and the difficulties she faced. I have also witnessed the betrayal of many leaders and I can vouch for the loyalty and unwavering spirit of many workers. Shaheed BB faced all kinds of circumstances with great bravado. Even during her exile she was aware of the conditions of her workers who lived in far-flung areas of her country.
The memories associated with Shaheed BB are indeed beautiful. Her entire life was spent in the struggle of making the lives of the people of her country beautiful. She was also a fountain of hope for the party workers. Her shahadat is not only a loss for Pakistan and its people but it is a loss for humanity. My personal and political association with Shaheed BB is a great asset for me. These words by Shaheed BB reflect her greatness: “Only history will tell how much I love my people, democracy, and humanity. But I can assure you that everything that I have done for my country, I’ve done it in goodwill for the betterment of my country.”
Today, the leadership of Pakistan People’s Party has been taken up by Shaheed BB’s son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The torch of association with the people, respect for democratic values, and love for Pakistan that was lit by Shaheed BB is still blazing today through her son.

#Pakistan - #PPP - OP-ED Letter to Benazir Bhutto

Nadir Nabil Gabol

I was just four-years-old when my father took me to see you. And so tremendously excited was I that I brought along my favourite toys to show you.
You, have I revered since time immemorial. Even before we ever met. This probably had something to do with the portrait of you that hung on our drawing room wall; one that I saw every day as I was getting ready for school. Or perhaps it was more because of the veneration for you I saw in my father’s eyes. But what I do know for sure is that 10 years ago — on December 27 — I lost half of my very self when tragedy struck Rawalpindi.
My first memory of meeting you was at Bilawal’s birthday party. I was just four-years-old but felt such tremendous excitement when my father told me that we were going to see BB that I decided to take along a few of my favourite toys just to show you. It was as if I were going to meet my fairy godmother. And, oh how my elation lasted for days; with me telling everyone at school that I had finally met Benazir! I still remember dancing every time I heard Dila Teer Bija on the radio, while screaming Jiye Bhutto Benazir along with the song. But I had to wait until the summer of 1998 until our paths crossed once more. This was a time that I really needed to see you. My grandfather had just passed away and his death had affected me deeply. And even though the establishment was out to get you — you still came to our home to condole with our family. Those moments with you were gave me the strength to bear the heartbreak of losing my most beloved grandfather, whom I adored so dearly. Sadly, soon afterwards, you were forced into exile to avoid imminent persecution by the then Nawaz Sharif government. And from then on did I consume myself with counting down the long days to your return to Pakistan.

Upon entering adolescence, I found myself becoming a more vocal advocate of the PPP. This made me something of an anomaly at school since the ‘cool’ thing at the time was to support Gen Musharraf along with his team of technocrats, such as Shaukat Aziz. And all the while, people around me would hurl baseless allegations against you and try to taunt me by calling me Benazir ki aulaad — something that I proudly owned. In return, I would tirelessly defend you; arguing that you were the only leader in the country who was the real torchbearer of democracy, the only true representative of the people. When my father would go to Dubai or London to meet you, I would only ask one thing of him: to tell me when we would have to wait for you no more.
The enemies of the Bhutto family, the enemies of the PPP and the enemies of democracy might have rejoiced on December 27, 2007, believing they had won. But I am certain that they have since realised they have and will never triumph. And I refuse to accept to this day that you are no more. For, simply put, you live on. In my heart and soul. In Bilawal. And in the people
And then, finally, the wait was over. You had announced that you would be coming home on October 18, 2007. As for me, I was celebrating in my own way. I had covered my car with posters of you and with party flags. For several nights before your touchdown — I simply couldn’t sleep, so beside myself with excitement was I. While my father was lucky enough to go inside the airport to meet you and then to accompany you on the truck, I was more than content to see you from the midst of the huge crowds that had come to welcome you home. It was the same scene all over the country.

#Pakistan - #PPP members, opponents shower praise on Benazir on 10th death anniversary

Political leaders have hailed Benazir Bhutto, twice elected prime minister and leader of the Pakistan People’s Party, for her services for the sake of democracy in the country on her 10 death anniversary.
Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun and bomb attack in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007, as she returned after addressing a mammoth rally at Liaquat Bagh.
Leaders from the PPP as well as other parties lauded the late Benazir Bhutto for her struggle for democracy and welfare of the people of Pakistan.
Paying tributes to the late leader, PPP Senator Rubina Khalid said Benazir's ideology was to strengthen democratic norms in the country and welfare of the people.
"She was a brave lady, who not only led the country in a courageous manner but also sacrificed her life for the country and its people."
Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Sial said the vision and thoughts of Benazir Bhutto serve as a guiding light for the people. "The martyr of democracy made the defence of the country invincible; her name represents an ideology in itself," he said, adding that the services of the late prime minister are also acknowledged internationally.
In his address with the PPP rally in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said, "Although, it has been 10 years since Benazir Bhutto left us, it appears as if the incident occurred only a day ago."
Shah vowed to take forth the mission of his late leader in the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said, "Had Benazir been alive, the country would not have been going through such circumstances."
"The democracy we see today is all because of Benazir Bhutto," he added.
The personality of the late prime minister, who became an icon of democracy, was so charismatic that her admirers also include members from rival political parties.
In her message on Benazir's death anniversary, State Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb said the late prime minister's struggle for the restoration of democracy and the rule of law and the constitution was exemplary.
"After the constitution, the historic document of Charter of Democracy is of vital significance, which was a result of joint efforts by Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif," she noted.
"The name of Benazir will always be there in the democratic and political history of Pakistan."
Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq said Benazir's assassination remains a "dark chapter" in the history of the country. "She always believed in tolerance and reconciliation, and working for democracy and welfare of the people, rising above politics."
"She secured a place for herself through her intellect, untiring efforts and courage," Sadiq said, hailing the late premier as a "fearless leader."
Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto was a huge national tragedy, adding, "Another tragedy is that her murderers remain out of the reach of law."
Hussain Haqqani, who has been Pakistan's ambassador to the US and a PPP affiliate in the past, said Benazir Bhutto, during the last 10 years of her life in exile, heeded most on the prospect regarding what changes she would bring in Pakistan and how would she address the people's concerns regarding her past tenures, if she ever returned to the country again and was given a chance to govern it.
"For this, she contacted a number of intellectuals, academics, and met with people who had been part of different governments. So that she may provide better governance to Pakistan upon her return," Haqqani said.

#RememberingSMBB - Country still weeps for Benazir

Musharraf murdered Benazir: Bilawal * PPP chairman complains that the judiciary for whom Benazir struggled hasn’t given the victims of terrorism and the missing persons any justice * Zardari warns rivals that even though he tries not to indulge in politics of vengeance, he too has his limits.

Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto on Wednesday held former military dictator Pervez Musharraf responsible for the assassination of his mother Benazir Bhutto.
Addressing a huge crowd of PPP supporters in Garhi Khuda Bukhsh who had gathered to commemorate Benazir Bhutto’s 10th death anniversary, the PPP chairman said Musharraf exploited the entire situation to assassinate his mother by purposely sabotaging her security so that she is assassinated and taken off the scene. “The man who pulled her security — rather than the man who pulled the trigger —is responsible for Benazir’s death,” Bilawal said, as he cried, “Qaatil! Qaatil! Musharraf qatil!”
The PPP chairman said that Musharraf directly threatened late Benazir Bhutto and told her that her security was based on the state of relationship with him. On the day of her assassination, the security cordon was taken off from her by the former military ruler, he told his supporters, and added that Benazir was punished for propagating democracy and for her deep love for the people. “My leader [Benazir], you were punished for fighting against dictatorship and presenting Islam’s peaceful face to the world,” Bilawal said. “You were punished for fighting for women and speaking for the oppressed. You were punished for loving the people,” he added.
“Oh my leader, today the country is burning in the fire of terrorism and the eastern and western frontiers are insecure … Pakistan is remembering you when entire country has been engulfed in terrorism,” Bilawal said, while addressing her mother.
“Oh my leader, the rulers have damaged the sanctity of parliament and democracy … country has been trapped in heavy burden of debts … peasants and labourers are being economically murdered … schools and worship places have also become insecure,” he continued.
Bilawal turned emotional during the speech and said in a sad tune, “Oh my great leader, I assure you that we will revive the lost glory of democracy and will strengthen … I promise with you that I will bring the caravans of victory to Garhi Khuda Bukhsh from across country after the next election.”
“I am firmly holding the hand of the people which had been given to you by my grandfather and I pledge that I will never distract from your path,” Bilawal said, while addressing his late mother. Bilawal claimed that despite their rivals’ best efforts to spoil her good work, the present-day PPP is working hard to continue her legacy. “The 1973 Constitution, whose face was distorted by dictators, has been restored to its original form. You used to be upset at poverty, so we started the Benazir Income Support Programme. We also allotted state land to poor farmers. We have built heart, kidney and liver hospitals everywhere, and treatment there is free of cost. You cared about the environment so we also started wind energy plants in Sindh. We’ve built dams to store water.”
Bilawal also accused the incumbent government of undoing Benazir’s legacy, saying, “They’ve weakened the democracy and parliament. Small provinces are being isolated from the federal government. This is a murderous government.”
He also attached some blame of his mother’s unresolved murder case on the judiciary, saying, “The judiciary for whom you [Benazir] struggled, the same judiciary hasn’t given us, you, the victims of terror and missing persons any justice.” “O custodians of justice, please give justice to someone,” he said.
Paying rich tribute to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, PPP Co-chairman Asif Zardari said Benazir was a visionary leader whose legacy would live on for generations.

He said Benazir bravely confronted the forces of darkness and the dictatorial regimes. “Eventually, she embraced martyrdom while fighting for the rights of the masses,” he added.
Enumerating the projects that PPP undertook under his presidency, Zardari said the projects were envisioned by Benazir.
Referring to PML-N’s ‘grievances’, Zardari said the party had always issues with the PPP. “We will not support you this time, as time and again you have backstabbed us,” he asserted.
He deplored the ‘double standards’ of justice in the country, saying, “We spent 12 years in jail and you [Nawaz Sharif] attained freedom after spending only 12 days in the jail.”
On the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), the former president said his party would not make any compromise for another NRO.
Zardari warned his rivals that even though he tries not to indulge in the politics of vengeance, he too has his limits.
“There is a conspiracy still going on,” he claimed. “The conspiracy is still hatching new eggs – but our philosophy teaches patience.
“We have been patient, but I warn our rivals: don’t push us to our limits. You have always back-stabbed us but we will not side with you this time.
“We will win the elections this time. I will not forgive them. I will defeat them from Kashmir to Gilgit-Baltistan,” he said.
On Dec 27 in 2007, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated soon after she finished an election rally at Liaquat Bagh in garrison city of Rawalpindi.
Ten years down the road, the prime suspects behind her assassination have not been brought to book yet. Of late, an anti-terrorism court acquitted five suspects and awarded imprisonment of 17 years to two police officers – Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad – in the assassination of the slain PPP leader.
Later, a division bench of the Lahore High Court suspended the conviction of the two officers and released them on bail against a surety of Rs 1 million each.

#Pakistan - Bilawal hits hard at opponents, accuses Musharraf of Benazir’s murder

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday took aim at political opponents as he addressed a rally here on the tenth death anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
In an apparent reference to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, Bilawal criticised the PTI chief for having corrupt aides.
"A close aide of the same man who based his political campaign on the slogan of fighting corruption was found guilty of corruption."
Without naming Imran, the PPP chairman alleged that he was distributing millions to terrorists.
“The man who blamed you for the Karsaz incident is making excuses to protect terrorists and distributes hundreds of millions between those who have sympathies with terrorists.”
"My leader (Benazir), today, blood is cheaper than food,” he said. "One day the prime minister says that we have destroyed the terrorists and our places of worship and schools are safe and the very next day a church in Quetta is attacked.”
He added that the political leadership does not have the will to combat terrorism.
“Politics has fallen into the laps of hypocrites today, but I rebel from the nexus of religion and politics,” he said.
The PPP chairman pledged that his party would continue to fight for the freedom and dignity of the judiciary.
Hitting hard at the ruling Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N), he said the government is responsible for economically murdering farmers and labourers in the country.
“Your farmers, your labourers are being economically murdered by this government,” he said. "They have created an economy that supports only the elite and powerful."
“Today, a conspiracy is being hatched to destroy every institution of the country, the economy has been destroyed, and efforts are being made to distance the smaller provinces from the centre.”
“Those who were alleging that others were thieves have been identified for the biggest theft in the country,” Bilawal said in an apparent reference to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif – who was disqualified from holding public office in a verdict on the Panama Papers case by the Supreme Court.
He further said that the people are proud of Benazir — the leader of the oppressed people of Pakistan.
"Your murderers are still playing Holi with the blood of innocent citizens," the PPP Chairman said. "Youth, innocent sons and daughters of the soils, students, and innocent citizens are being murdered today by the same people who are responsible for your murder."
Bilawal alleged that Benazir was punished for establishing a peaceful side of Islam, fighting dictatorship, fighting terrorists, protecting democracy, establishing the supremacy of the constitution, fighting for the rights of oppressed citizens, and giving the women of this country their due rights.
"You [Benazir] were punished for your courage, strength, and undying love for the nation," he said, as the entire podium, including Aseefa Bhutto Zardari and Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari chanted qatil qatil Musharraf qatil (murderer, murderer Musharraf is a murderer).
“Bibi Shaheed (martyred) we have not forgotten your promises,” Bilawal said. "And our spirits are at unrest while remembering your on your tenth death anniversary. You were a symbol of life and hope."
The bereaved son of the slain leader of PPP said that the people will remember today as the Day of Martyrdom because Benazir was a martyr who will live on as an example for people.
“You are still the strong bond between all of the four provinces,” Bilawal said.
"PPP will continue working for the judiciary’s freedom," he said while addressing a rally in Gari Khuda Baksh on the tenth death anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

'Musharraf exploited situation to assassinate my mother'

In an interview to BBC, Bilawal held former military dictator Pervez Musharraf personally responsible for the murder of his mother Benazir Bhutto, in an interview to BBC.
"Musharraf exploited this entire situation to assassinate my mother," he said. "He purposely sabotaged her security so that she would be assassinated and taken off the scene."
Bilawal said that he doesn’t hold the man who fired the bullet at his late mother responsible for her murder on the evening of December 27 at Liaquatbagh ground in Rawalpindi. The PPP chairman said that Musharraf directly threatened late Benazir and told that her security was based on the state of relationship with him.
He added that on the day of her assassination, the security cordon was taken off from her by the former military ruler.

When asked by the interviewer that a segment considers his father, former president Asif Ali Zardari, responsible for Benazir’s murder, he reportedly said that this assumption is like calling an innocent an oppressor.

#Pakistan - #PPP demanded timely elections on basis of new delimitation

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Wednesday demanded timely elections on the basis of new delimitation, extension of Peshawar High Court (PHC) jurisdiction to Federally Administrated Tribal Areas and merger of Fata’s with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa after making reforms.

The meeting of PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), presided over by Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto jointly, was held at Naudero House on the tenth anniversary of party’s slain leader Benazir Bhutto in Larkana. During the meeting several resolutions were passed.

The party in the meeting has demanded timely elections on the basis of the new delimitation while placing before the Parliament a bill for extending the jurisdiction of Peshawar High Court to Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) with other reforms in tribal areas.

During the meeting, party leaders said that under the National Action Plan (NAP), banned outfits, which are now being mainstreamed, were not allowed to surface with a new name and start functioning in the country.

The CEC also expressed grave disappointment over the recent verdict of the anti-terror court in Benazir’s murder case, calling it unacceptable while vowing to vigorously pursue the appeal filed against the verdict.

The party also expressed concerns over the levying of new taxes on the people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) without giving them their rights, which sparked mass protests in the area.
PPP’s spokesperson and secretary general of the PPPP Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the party also discussed the forthcoming general elections and directed all party chapters to gear up, ensure that women vote and take all steps needed to prevent any rigging.

Regarding Benazir’s murder case he said that CEC has expressed grave disappointment over the recent verdict of the anti-terror court in Benazir’s murder case, calling it unacceptable while vowing to vigorously pursue the appeal filed against the verdict.  He said that PPP would not be part of any protest movement that lessen that power of parliament and derail the whole democratic system.

#RememberingSMBB - Pervez Musharraf killed my mother: Bilawal Bhutto

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto has said that he considers former President General (R) Pervez Musharraf the murderer of his mother Benazir Bhutto.
Talking to a British media outlet, Bhutto revealed that crucial details about the assassination of Benazir Bhutto are bring held back in order to protect the former general.
“Pervez Musharraf directly threatened my mother that the guarantee of her security upon her return to Pakistan depended on Bhutto’s cooperation with the government,” Bilawal noted.
“I personally hold Pervez Musharraf responsible for the assassination of my mother,” he added.
The PPP chairman further said that he did not want to hurl allegations at certain individuals or institutions because his party did not have specific information as to who Musharraf called or contacted to get rid of Benazir Bhutto.
“The PPP does not regard the young man who killed Benazir in a bomb and gun attack on her vehicle in 2007 as her murderer. In reality, Pervez Musharraf killed my mother by taking advantage of the situation,” Bilawal maintained.
“The terrorist did shoot the bullet from which my mother was killed, but the former president removed my mother’s security protocol on purpose so she would be an easy target.”
Commenting on the recent decision of the court to grant bail to the accused in the Benazir assassination case, Bilawal Bhutto was of the opinion that the state of Pakistan did not yet have the power to hold a dictator accountable for his actions.
“The court disregarded the UN investigation, phone call recordings, and DNA evidence, as well crucial testimonies, in the trial. The ruling in the case is a mockery of justice,” he said.
Bhutto also added that he expected the accused who had admitted to their wrongdoings in front of the court to be convicted of their crimes, at least in part because it would shield Pervez Musharraf from being blamed for the crime, but that did not happen either. The court first convicted the police officials who had ordered the hosing down of the crime scene after the murder, but then approved their bail, and now they are back on active duty, the PPP chief said.
“My mother did not talk much about her wishes in regards to my career as a politician. Most of our focus was on getting admission into a reputed university. Upon my acceptance at Harvard, she was very happy,” Bilawal recounts in reference to questions about his relationship with his mother.
“I wanted to pursue post-graduate education after my years at Oxford. I wanted to have a job, to get married and take care of my family at home. And after doing all that, if I wanted, I could have come into politics.”

After Shaheed BB’s murder Zardari’s slogan “Pakistan Khappay” saved the country: Bilawal Bhutto

Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhuttoon her 10th martyrdom anniversary being observed at her mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Bux on Wednesday, December 27, 2017.
PPP has finalized arrangements for the congregation, where a million men, women and children are expected to gather to pay tributes to the first Muslim woman elected as Prime Minister after an untiring and arduous struggle wading through an ocean of sacrifices by herself and thousands of her supporters.
In his message on the eve of martyrdom day anniversary, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that those who killed Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had actually planned to kill the whole nation but President Asif Ali Zardari saved the country by raising “Pakistan Khappay” slogan after her assassination in Rawalpindi.
He said that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto lost her father, brothers and even mother fighting for the rights of downtrodden masses and dictatorial vultures hovering over the country, freed from the imperial yoke by our forefathers after a long independence movement.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said in her valiant battle against the forces of darkness and elements of dictatorships, she eventually embraced martyrdom in line with the legacy of her father Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto but refused to withdraw from the cause.
PPP Chairman pledged that the cause, for which Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto laid down her life, would continue to be vigorously pursued for transformation of the country into an egalitarian, democratic, peaceful and progressive Pakistan.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said December 27 is the day to offer salute and tributes to her by every heart, which beats for Pakistan and every mind, which shares her dream for Pakistan and its people.
