#RememberingSMBB - Sindh to observe a public holiday on Benazir’s 10th death anniversary
Sindh government, on Tuesday, announced that December 27 would be a public holiday to observe late Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Benazir Bhutto’s 10th death anniversary.
This announcement is in connection to the plans of PPP to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the party leader who embraced martyrdom on December 27, 2007 while returning from a public rally she addressed in Liaquat Bagh. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots after which there was a suicide blast which left more than 20 people dead including the former prime minister.
PPP has organised a ceremony on Wednesday in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in Larkana. The village is where the Bhuttos hail from and where Benazir is buried. A Mushaira will be held as part of the ceremony and will be followed by a public rally which will be addressed by PPP president and chairman.
Security arrangements have also been made for the observance of the late premier’s death anniversary. Over 7000 Rangers and police personnel are expected to perform their duties on Wednesday and 60 CCTV cameras have been installed in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh for the sake of security.
Earlier today, Sherry Rehman lauded Benazir for dying like a soldier. While criticising the government, she said that the current government had put the country into financial duress through debts and said that only PPP had the vision for development in the country.
Rehman Malik also urged the Afghan government to cooperate with Pakistan and return the person who is suspected of involvement in Benazir’s assassination.
Referring to the struggle of PPP despite the loss of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, Latif Khosa said that the party raised the slogan of “Pakistan Khappay” despite the sacrifices that it gave.

#RememberingSMBB - After The Decade –Remembering Benazir Bhutto
She was a heroine born in a civilization of heroes. The very being of her – womanhood – was inherently anti-establishment; at odds with establishment of every kind, be it political, social, traditional, or religious. All she did was to hang in there and they trembled with fear. That made all the difference.
She belonged to the tribe of dreamers. She did not die because she wanted to restore democracy in Pakistan. She died because she was a dreamer. This is what dreamers do. They die. Often young.
Hers was a struggle much more monumental than that of her father. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto rode on the wave of populist socialism in the late 1960s. He was the son of his times and his dream shared by millions of dreamers living in the other parts of the world. BB’s struggle, on the other hand, was much more solitary.She lived and struggled through the time when “spring of Nations” was turning into “Autumn of Nations”. The Left was waning and the era of ideology and strong leaders was about to end. If there is one word that defines Benazir Bhutto it is resistance. The resistance against the overarching role of military in Pakistani politics and the burgeoning religious extremism in post-Zia era. She was a dreamer who dreamed of resistance, lived by it, and died by it.
Not unlike during her lifetime, she still is a highly polarized figure. Today she is either eulogized as martyr of democracy or rebuffed as a feudal who inherited the throne. The question however remains as to her legacy and relevance in today’s Pakistan. Is Benazir Bhutto still relevant after one decade?
The answer is a resounding yes. Her relevance is beyond politics. She is not relevant because she governed the country twice or she made some political alliances. She is relevant because she has come to be a yardstick against which we can gauge our current socio-political conditions.
Now imagine a national level leaderreciting the following verses in a public gathering and stretch your imagination a little further and imagine a woman reciting these verses:
“Mazhabke jo byopaariheiN
Who sab se baribimaariheiN
In jhuteaurmakaaroN se
MazhabkethekedaroN se
Main BaghihuN”
(These traders of religion are the worst disease. I rebel from these liars, hypocrites, and guardians of religion)
She recited this poem, written by Khalid Javed Jan, publicly many times. Could she have done that today? Probably not. Probably she would have insisted to recite it anyway. That’s why she is not alive today.
In recent years state has capitulated time and again in the name of mainstreaming militants, peace accords, and avoiding the backlash. There has scarcely been any political opposition to yielding the space to non-state actors. It was back in 2007 when emotions were running high in the aftermath of Lal Masjid operation and no one dared to utter a word that she was heard saying this on Britain’s Sky TV:
“I’m glad there was no cease-fire with the militants in the mosque because cease-fires simply embolden the militants. There will be a backlash, but at some time we have to stop appeasing the militants. We can’t afford to keep appeasing them.”
Her support for Lal Masjid operation was probably one of the major reasons that she lost her life. She would probably have done the same today if need be. But then she is not alive anymore.
We are living in a hate-filled world today. The us vs them binary feels to be the order of the day. It takes a deep historical understanding to see through the fog of half-baked truths and it takes immense courage to see the need of introspection. In her posthumous book Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy and the West, she writes:
Muslims are dealing not with a clash between civilizations but rather with a clash within a civilization. The most critical battle for the hearts and the souls of successor generation of Muslim leaders, and for the passion of the Muslims around the world, is not a battle with the West… It is about the lack of tolerance that some interpretations show for other interpretations within Islam or other religions outside Islam. In other words, the real clash within and outside Islam is the battle between the past and the future.”
She got it right. It was the clash within a civilization that got her killed and not the clash between civilizations. How many political leaders can comment today on the most pressing issue faced by us with such astuteness and deep historical insight?
She came back to Pakistan on October 18th, 2007. The way the songs in the streets of Karachi turned into fear and loathing by the midnight captures the 70-year-long political history of Pakistan in a perfect manner. After midnight, she knew there was no going back. She knew what she was to do. She knew what dreamers do. They die. Often young.
She was a kind of person who make great characters in novels. More than history books, she will be remembered in folk tales. Benazir Bhutto will be remembered until the last of us is able to feel pain when hurt.

Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on her 10th martyrdom anniversary being observed at her mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Bux on Wednesday.
The PPP has finalized all arrangements for the congregation, where a large number workers expected to gather to pay tributes to the first Muslim woman elected as Prime Minister after an untiring and arduous struggle.
In his message on the eve of death anniversary issued here on Tuesday, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that those who killed Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had actually planned to kill the whole nation but President Asif Ali Zardari saved the country by raising “Pakistan Khappay” slogan after her assassination in Rawalpindi.
He said that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto lost her father, brothers and even mother fighting for the rights of downtrodden masses and against dictatorial vultures hovering over the country, freed from the imperial yoke by our forefathers after a long independence movement.
Bilawal said in her valiant battle against the forces of darkness and elements of dictatorships, she eventually embraced martyrdom in line with the legacy of her father Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto but refused to withdraw from the cause.
The PPP Chairman pledged that the cause, for which Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto laid down her life, would continue and to be vigorously pursued for transformation of the country into an egalitarian, democratic, peaceful and progressive Pakistan.
Bilawal said December 27 is the day to offer salute and tributes to her by every heart, which beats for Pakistan and every mind, which shares her dream for Pakistan and its people.

Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has finalized arrangements to observe the 10th death anniversary of the assassinated Chairperson and former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto on Wednesday in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto.
PPP will start function of the anniversary at 1.00 pm on December 27, 2017 (Wednesday), there will be a public meeting to be addressed by the Chairman of PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Former President and Co-Chairman of PPP Asif Ali Zardari, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah and Central leaders of PPP at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto.
A documentary, depicting life and achievements of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto will also be shown on the occasion.
Separate camps have been set-up to accommodate the leaders and workers from all the four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, Northern areas and Azad Kashmir.
Reception camps have also been established. Leaders of the PPP and workers have already started reaching at Garhi Khuda Bux Bhutto.
A Mushaira has also been scheduled in front of mausoleum of Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto on Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Larkana Kashif Ali Tipu and SSP Larkana Tanvir Hussain Tunio on Tuesday told media men that special security and traffic arrangement will be made on the occasion.
They said over 7000 thousand police personnel including Women police, Traffic police, special police commandos of Sindh Police and three hundred personnel of Shahbaz Rangers will also be deployed to ensure the law and order on the occasion.
The SSP Larkana told that senior rank officers will supervise and monitor the activities in Garhi Khuda Bux and Naudero vicinities. An aerial surveillance at the surrounding the Naudero and Garhi Khuda Bux Bhutto will be carried out to monitor the activities, besides CCTV cameras will be installed at the different locations of Bhutto House Naudero, Garhi Khuda Bux and surrounding of Jalsa gah and parking areas.
On the occasion, Bomb Disposal squad, bomb detectors, scanning machines, jammers, snapper’s dogs, watch towers, 60 walk through gates with police vehicles and mobile will be setup for the security purpose. All activities will be monitor by the high officials of Sindh Police and concerned officials.
DC Larkana said various medical and other welcome camps would be established and 60 fire brigades will be deployed at the various locations, added that the medical team along with equipped mobile hospitals and ambulance services will serve the public.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Tuesday demanded timely elections on the basis of new delimitations, and said that they will not be a party to any movement that may result in derailing the system or undermining the parliament.
These demands were contained in the resolutions adopted during a combined meeting of the Central Executive Committees of the party presided over jointly by Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Naudero House on the eve of the tenth death anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
“The party wishes to make it clear that it will not permit any disruption in the continuity of democratic process,” it said.
Party Secretary General Senator Farhatullah Babar said that PPP also discussed the forthcoming general elections next year, directing all party chapters to gear up, ensuring women voting and taking all steps needed to prevent any rigging.
“The PPP will not be a party to any movement that may result in derailing the system or undermining the parliament,” he said.
The CEC expressed grave disappointment over the recent verdict of the anti-terror court in the murder case of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, describing it as unacceptable, and vowed to vigorously pursue the appeal filed against the verdict to expose the culprits and bring them to justice.
The meeting also expressed grave concern over media reports suggesting that militant organisations were being streamlined, and reminded that under the National Action Plan (NAP), banned militant outfits will not be allowed to reappear under other names.
The CEC resolved to vigorously pursue FATA merger with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, extend the jurisdiction of Peshawar High Court to tribal areas and other reforms in FATA.
The party also expressed concern over the levying of new taxes on people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) without giving them their rights, and which had led to mass protests in the area.
The meeting demanded that fresh delimitation work in accordance with the recently passed constitutional amendment bill.
Moreover, the CEC rejected unilateral moves to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and warned against its consequences.
Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the CEC also expressed grave concern over the discrimination in accountability of political leaders from Punjab and those from Sindh. It also denounced moves to roll back provincial autonomy and non-implementation of the 18th Amendment.

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah Tuesday said the day of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s death anniversary was a sign of ‘Great Sacrifice for democracy’.
In a statement on the eve of Benazir’s 10th death anniversary, he said the history could not forget the sacrifices of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto for the sake of democracy.
Khursheed Shah said the nation and the history were witness that the leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party and its workers had not only planted the seed of democracy but it had grown by giving matchless sacrifices.
He said by following the vision of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benzir brought social and economic stability in the country during her tenures which would keep on benefiting the masses in the future too.
He said Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and his brave daughter Benazir eliminated the atrocious dictatorship from the country.
“Our brave leader, in disappointing situation, gave the confidence to the nation and brought them out in the light of democracy from the abasing darkness of dictatorship,” Khursheed Shah said.
He said, “We are proud to be the followers of Zulfikar and Benazir Bhutto as they have taught us the difference between the democracy and autocracy properly.
Therefore, we will ensure an independent and strong democracy in the country at all costs.”

Benazir Bhutto was the first lady to rule any muslim country in this world. She was also one of the most influential leaders of south asia.
Benazir Bhutto was born in Karachi, Pakistan to a prominent political family. At age 16 she left her homeland to study at Harvard’s Radcliffe College. After completing her undergraduate degree at Radcliffe she studied at England’s Oxford University, where she was awarded a second degree in 1977.
Later that year she returned to Pakistan where her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, had been elected prime minister, but days after her arrival, the military seized power and her father was imprisoned. In 1979 he was hanged by the military government of General Zia Ul Haq.
Bhutto herself was also arrested many times over the following years, and was detained for three years before being permitted to leave the country in 1984. She settled in London, but along with her two brothers, she founded an undergroundorganization to resist the military dictatorship. When her brother died in 1985, she returned to Pakistan for his burial, and was again arrested for participating in anti-government rallies.
Bhutto herself was also arrested many times over the following years, and was detained for three years before being permitted to leave the country in 1984. She settled in London, but along with her two brothers, she founded an undergroundorganization to resist the military dictatorship. When her brother died in 1985, she returned to Pakistan for his burial, and was again arrested for participating in anti-government rallies.
She returned to London after her release, and martial law was lifted in Pakistan at the end of the year. Anti-Zia demonstrations resumed and Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan in April 1986. The public response to her return was tumultuous, and she publicly called for the resignation of Zia Ul Haq, whose government had executed her father.
She was elected co-chairwoman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) along with her mother, and when free elections were finally held in 1988, she herself became Prime Minister. At 35, she was one of the youngest chief executives in the world, and the first woman to serve as prime minister in an Islamic country.
Only two years into her first term, President Ghulam Ishaq Khan dismissed Bhuttofrom office. She initiated an anti-corruption campaign, and in 1993 was re-elected as Prime Minister. While in office, she brought electricity to the countryside and built schools all over the country. She made hunger, housing and health care her top priorities, and looked forward to continuing to modernize Pakistan.
At the same time, Bhutto faced constant opposition from the Islamic fundamentalist movement. Her brother Mir Murtaza, who had been estranged from Benazir since their father’s death, returned from abroad and leveled charges of corruption at Benazir’s husband, Asif Ali Zardari. Mir Murtaza died when his bodyguard became involved in a gunfight with police in Karachi. The Pakistani public was shocked by this turn of events and PPP supporters were divided over the charges against Zardari.
In 1996 President Leghari of Pakistan dismissed Benazir Bhutto from office, alleging mismanagement, and dissolved the National Assembly. A Bhutto re-election bid failed in 1997, and the next elected government, headed by the more conservative Nawaz Sharif, was overthrown by the military. Bhutto’s husband was imprisoned, and once again, she was forced to leave her homeland. For nine years, she and her children lived in exile in London, where she continued to advocate the restoration of democracy in Pakistan. In the autumn of 2007, in the face of death threats from radical Islamists, and the hostility of the government, she returned to her native country.
Although she was greeted by enthusiastic crowds, within hours of her arrival, her motorcade was attacked by a suicide bomber. She survived this first assassination attempt, although more than 100 bystanders died in the attack. With national elections scheduled for January 2008, her Pakistan People’s Party was poised for a victory that would make Bhutto prime minister once again. Only a few weeks before the election, the extremists struck again. After a campaign rally in Rawalpindi, a gunman fired at her car before detonating a bomb, killing himself and more than 20 bystanders. Bhutto was rushed to the hospital, but soon succumbed to injuries suffered in the attack. In the wake of her death, rioting erupted throughout the country. The loss of the country’s most popular democratic leader has plunged Pakistan into turmoil, intensifying the dangerous instability of a nuclear-armed nation in a highly volatile region.
